Contract Signed with Caixa Foresees Start of Pre-Projects for Three International Crossings
The government of Rio Grande do Sul signed a contract with Caixa Econômica Federal to enable the construction of three international bridges connecting the state to Argentina. The works aim to replace ferry crossings and strengthen economic and logistical integration between the two countries.
Construction of New Bridges Promises to Connect Brazil and Argentina
The state government has just signed a strategic agreement with Caixa Econômica Federal, aiming to begin the preparation of pre-projects for three new international bridges between Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina. Currently, the connection between the two countries in areas such as Porto Mauá, Tiradentes do Sul, and Itaqui is made by ferries, which operate with scheduling limitations and are frequently impacted by climatic factors, such as the level of the Uruguay River.
According to a report published by Correio do Povo, the initial investment will be just over R$ 500 thousand, allocated for the creation of reference terms for the projects. The expectation is that the pre-projects, estimated at around R$ 10 million, will be contracted by the end of 2025. From that point on, the construction of the bridges may proceed, with the potential to create a lasting impact on the logistics of the southern region.

International Construction Project Advances with Support from Caixa
The planned crossings will connect the following points: Porto Mauá (RS) to Alba Posse (AR), Tiradentes do Sul (RS) to El Soberbio (AR), and Itaqui (RS) to Alvear (AR). All these locations are strategically important for the flow of agricultural production and the movement of goods. With the construction of the bridges, the intention is to ensure greater fluidity and safety in road transport between Brazil and Argentina.
During the contract signing, Governor Eduardo Leite emphasized the relevance of these works, both for the state’s development and for regional integration. He also mentioned the possibility of using the integrated contracting model, which allows for a faster construction process by combining the executive project and construction execution into a single bidding process.
Integrated Construction Can Accelerate International Works
Although a final budget for the works has not yet been defined, the state government estimates that the total cost could reach “hundreds of millions of reais.” The projection considers the complexity of the interventions and the high technical standards required for structures of this scale. The use of an integrated contracting model is seen as an efficient alternative to reduce deadlines and operational costs.
According to Agência Brasil, these bridges are expected to boost not only the transportation infrastructure in the border region but also local economic development, with a positive impact on bilateral trade. The project reinforces the role of Rio Grande do Sul as a strategic link between Brazil and Mercosur.
