Contract signed with Caixa foresees the start of preliminary projects for three international crossings
The government of Rio Grande do Sul has signed a contract with Caixa Econômica Federal to facilitate the construction of three international bridges that will connect the state to Argentina. The works aim to replace ferry crossings and strengthen economic and logistical integration between the two countries.
Construction of new bridges promises to connect Brazil and Argentina
The Rio Grande do Sul government has just signed a strategic agreement with Caixa Econômica Federal, aiming to begin the preparation of preliminary projects for three new bridges international connections between Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina. Currently, the connection between the two countries in areas such as Porto Mauá, Tiradentes do Sul and Itaqui is made by ferries, which operate with time restrictions and are frequently impacted by climatic factors, such as the level of the Uruguay River.
According to a report published by People's Mail, the initial investment will be just over R$500, an amount earmarked for creating the terms of reference for the projects. The expectation is that the preliminary projects, budgeted at around R$10 million, will be contracted by the end of 2025. After that, the construction of the bridges will be able to get off the ground, with the potential to generate a lasting impact on logistics in the southern region.

International construction project advances with support from Caixa
The planned crossings will connect the following points: Porto Mauá (RS) to Alba Posse (AR), Tiradentes do Sul (RS) to El Soberbio (AR) and Itaqui (RS) to Alvear (AR). All of these locations are strategically important for the flow of agricultural production and movement of goods. With the construction of the bridges, the intention is to ensure greater fluidity and safety in the road transport between Brazil and Argentina.
During the contract signing, Governor Eduardo Leite highlighted the importance of these projects, both for the development of the state and for regional integration. He also mentioned the possibility of using the integrated contracting model, which allows the construction process to be accelerated by combining the executive project and the execution of the work in the same bidding process.
Integrated construction can accelerate international projects
Although there is still no final budget defined for the works, the state government estimates that the total cost could reach “hundreds of millions of reais”. The projection takes into account the complexity of the interventions and the high technical standards required for structures of this size. The use of an integrated contracting model is indicated as an efficient alternative to reduce deadlines and operational costs.
According to Agency Brazil, these bridges should boost not only the transport infrastructure in the border region, but also local economic development, with a positive impact on bilateral trade. The project reinforces the role of Rio Grande do Sul as a strategic link between Brazil and Mercosur.
