With a Million-Dollar Investment, Brazil Will Have an Innovative Project: The Construction of a Tunnel for Hexatrains, Gigantic Trucks That Transport Eucalyptus for the Pulp Industry.

This tunnel promises not only to modernize the logistics of the sector but also to reduce environmental impact while boosting the regional economy.

In a million-dollar maneuver that promises to change the logistics landscape of Mato Grosso do Sul, the state government has launched a bidding process to construct an unprecedented structure.

A tunnel will be opened to facilitate the transport of gigantic trucks called hexatrains, which can carry up to 200 tons of eucalyptus.

These vehicles, which look more like trains than regular trucks, are vital to the growing pulp industry, already mobilizing millions of reals and driving new highways and factories.

At the center of this project is the MS-338, a state highway still under paving that promises to connect the cities of Camapuã and Ribas do Rio Pardo.

With a length of 111.5 km, this route is becoming the main corridor for hexatrains, which travel long distances to supply large industries like Suzano.

The tunnel is an essential piece to ensure the safety and efficiency of these colossal trucks, as crossing the highway without it poses risks of accidents and disruptions to logistics.

Tunnel Project Estimated in Millions

Agesul, the state agency responsible for managing projects, estimated the value of this work at around R$ 8.7 million.

Published on October 30, the bidding process requires interested companies to submit their proposals by November 26.

The selection criterion will be the lowest price, aiming to ensure that the cost does not compromise the state budget.

This investment is part of a larger plan to make the region a highly competitive industrial hub, leveraging natural resources and proximity to leading pulp companies.

The tunnel location will be strategic, between BR-060 and MS-357, to facilitate the flow of eucalyptus to the new Suzano unit in Ribas do Rio Pardo.

The highway, when completed, promises to boost the local economy, benefiting not only the pulp industry but also agribusiness, which relies on an efficient road network.

Suzano Leads Logistic Modernization

Suzano, a giant in the pulp industry with two factories in the region, is the main driver of hexatrain usage, which stand out as a sustainable alternative for transporting raw materials.

Since July 2024, the company has been operating a new unit in Ribas do Rio Pardo, strengthening its commitment to efficient logistics and the environment.

With 25 hexatrains in circulation, each composed of six semi-trailers, Suzano can significantly reduce carbon emissions, a competitive differential in the international market.

The use of hexatrains for transporting timber contributes to significant fuel savings and reduces heavy traffic on traditional highways.

In addition, the company has 457,000 hectares of planted forests in Mato Grosso do Sul, with plans to concentrate plantations close to the factory to optimize transport.

Hexatrains: Volvo’s Solution for Heavy Loads

The manufacturer Volvo, responsible for the creation of hexatrains, highlights that these vehicles have established themselves as a traditional solution in regions like Três Lagoas, where they have been operating for over a decade.

With a capacity of 200 tons, these trucks offer a 127% increase in load capacity compared to tritrains and 27% compared to pentatrains, other transport models used in the region.

The company states that hexatrains are especially advantageous for road preservation, as they concentrate large amounts of cargo in fewer vehicles, reducing wear and tear on the roads.

According to Agesul, the construction of a second passage on MS-338 is essential to prevent the impact of hexatrain traffic on the road.

By allowing these vehicles to use internal roads, the state government aims to preserve the lifespan of the highway, as well as prevent accidents that could disrupt the production flow for pulp industries.

Pulp Industry Drives Regional Investments

The eastern region of Mato Grosso do Sul has become a true hub for pulp production, attracting billion-dollar investments and new factories.

In addition to Suzano’s units, installations from Arauco are planned in Inocência and another in Água Clara.

This growth also reflects financial support from BNDES, which recently allocated R$ 2.3 billion to strengthen road infrastructure in the region, especially to improve transportation conditions for products and people.

The Future of Logistics in Brazil Relies on Infrastructure Investments

These investments, combined with logistical planning to accommodate hexatrains, reveal a broader strategy for regional development, positioning Mato Grosso do Sul as an important center for the forest and pulp industry.

The use of hexatrains and the construction of this tunnel highlight a coordinated effort between government and the private sector to modernize transportation and promote a more sustainable economy.

With the advancement of this type of project, the country could see an expansion of transportation with a positive impact on several fronts: from the economy to the environment.

The implementation of this tunnel may become a reference for other states looking for alternatives to optimize heavy transport in industrial areas.

Sou contra porque não reativar a linha férreo e transportar a madeira 🪵 de trem com pontos campo grande Ribas água clara inocência Corumbá deixar os caminhões transitar somente entre as fazendas e os terminais ferroviário
