Flexibility in working hours and mental well-being are highlights among the award-winning companies

May / 2023 - O Great Place To Work, a global consultancy that works with the mission of building a better society by transforming each organization into a “Great Place To Work for All”, discloses for the first time the  Best Companies Featured Oil and Gas 2022.

The survey was carried out in two stages: quantitative – the company must reach the minimum sample of employees and obtain a score equal to or greater than 70%. Once the conditions of the 1st stage have been achieved, the phase of filling out the certification and ranking questionnaires takes place. After the company's Certification, to compute the final score of the companies participating in the Oil and Gas Highlight list, only the final score from the climate survey is taken into account.

The first edition of the ranking had 69 registered companies that together represent 16.427 employees. This year, 15 companies were awarded, 5 companies from the Value Chain/Extraction/Distribution and 10 from the Transport and Logistics area.

In the profile of employees working in the winning companies, 35% are between 35 and 44 years old; 31% between 26 and 34; 16% between 45 and 54; 12% up to 25 and 7% over 55. The level of education indicated that 52% had completed high school or less, 21% had completed higher education, 14% had incomplete higher education and 12% had a postgraduate degree. As for the gender of employees, 79% of the companies are made up of men and 21% of women.

In senior leadership positions, 85% are occupied by men and 15% by women, in the middle leadership, men represent 78% and women 22% and in other positions, 71% are occupied by men and 29% by women. Among the 10 award-winning companies, the average age of the presidents is around 53 years old, the average time in charge is 6 years and no woman holds the position. The study also highlighted that the average time of existence (foundation) of awarded companies is 65 years.

Regarding the human resources sector, 33% of the winning companies indicated that they have from 1 to 5 employees in the human resources area and 27% indicated growth in the organizations' Human Resources area. Companies also found that on average they provide up to 7 days for onboarding (27%), 135 hours for formal training and 63% of institutions indicated that they formally evaluate the performance of their employees.

ESG practices, D&I and benefits

Other numbers worth mentioning are related to ESG and D&I practices: 60% of the awarded companies indicated that they have hybrid working hours, none of the awarded companies indicated that they have the practice of reducing hours without salary reduction, 80% of the companies have a license maternity/paternity for homoaffective families and 47% indicated that they have flexible working hours for employees in the organization.

Already 53% have someone responsible for combating discrimination and promoting diversity and/or inclusion, none have a permanent lactation room dedicated exclusively to this use, 27% offer leave to care for a child or a relative who is sick.

And 27% of the companies have structured ESG (Environment/ Social/ Governance) strategies, policies and/or practices, 20% have a specific program aimed at hiring and including minority groups and 7% offer stability for the dismissal of new parents in addition to the minimum required by law and no company has day care or nurseries on or near the workplace. 73% of award-winning organizations indicated they had adopted mental health and wellness-related practice(s) in the past 20 months.

Regarding benefits, 33% of the companies in the ranking offer language courses, 20% offer coaching and grant scholarships for graduation or postgraduate studies, 13% provide funds for employees to choose where to use them, 7% have a corporate university, 20% offer reimbursement or some value for use in gyms, 7% offer sabbatical leave (unpaid) and 10% of employees were promoted.

About turnover and factors of permanence in the company, 2% of the employees left voluntarily. Dismissal turnover represented, in the period, around 5% of total dismissals and 11% of the people who make up the award-winning staff were hired in the last 12 months.

When questioned about the reason for staying in the oil and gas industry, 38% of employees answered opportunity for growth, 14% alignment of values, 32% quality of life, 14% compensation and benefits and 2% stability.

In the confidence indices by dimensions, 91% believe in the credibility of the leaders to manage people and manage the business in general, 89% in the respect of the leaders in the relationship with employees, both professionally and personally, 89% in the impartiality of the leaders with regard to all employees, 94% are proud to practice their profession and work for this company and 93% believe in camaraderie among co-workers and the presence of a sense of teamwork.

Statements by employees about the work environment

The statements in which the award-winning employees most agreed in the survey are that “people are treated well regardless of their color or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender and age” (98%), “this is a physically safe place to work” ( 97%), “I am proud to tell others that I work here” (97%), “managers are honest and ethical in conducting business” (96%) and “when you join this organization, they make you feel good -welcoming” (96%).

The statements with the least responses are: "I believe the amount I receive as profit sharing from the organization is fair” (73%), “managers avoid favoritism” (82%), “people here are paid adequately for the service they do” (78%), “ managers involve people in decisions that affect their activities and their work environment” (81%) and “we have differentiated benefits here” (82%).
