With the Arrival of the Confidence Auto Brand and the V8 Engine, GWM is Definitely Charting the Path to Establish Itself as One of the Main Players in the High-Performance Automotive Segment.
GWM (Great Wall Motors), the largest private automaker in China, has just taken a big step in its journey to challenge European automotive giants. The brand unveiled its first V8 engine at the Shanghai Auto Show, aimed at equipping luxury vehicles and competing directly with brands like BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-AMG.
Although it does not yet have a specific car to use the engine, GWM is creating a new luxury brand, Confidence Auto, which will be positioned above the already established Wey. This V8 engine promises to be a significant addition to the brand’s portfolio.
The V8 Engine from GWM
The V8 engine from GWM is a 4.0 twin-turbo with a “hot V” configuration, a design adopted by renowned brands like BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-AMG.

Fiat launches the new 2027 Toro hybrid with 48V, 176 hp, an electric motor of 15.5 hp, a 0.85 kWh battery, up to 7% fuel savings, 8% fewer emissions, and possible exemption from IPVA.
In this configuration, the airflow is inverted: intake occurs from the external sides of the engine, while exhaust gases are directed to the central part, where the two turbos are located.
This arrangement allows for a quicker and more efficient engine response, optimizing performance and the immediate response of the turbos.
The V8 will be paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, developed in-house by GWM, which is already used in the automaker’s longitudinal engine models, such as the Tank 300 SUV.
The transmission, along with the transfer case, indicates that the engine will be utilized in 4×4 vehicles, expanding the possibilities of performance and versatility.
What to Expect from the V8 from GWM?
Although GWM has not disclosed the exact power that the V8 engine will generate, expectations are high.
The Chinese automaker has already demonstrated its potential with the plug-in hybrid Tank 700, which combines a 3.0 twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor and a 9-speed transmission, achieving 523 hp and 86.6 kgfm.
With the new V8 engine, GWM promises even more impressive performance, surpassing these numbers. The expectation is that this engine will deliver over 523 hp, solidifying GWM’s entry into the luxury segment.
The Confidence Auto Brand
The V8 engine is part of a larger strategy from GWM, which is developing Confidence Auto, a new brand that will sit above the established Wey line in the Chinese market.
The intention is to directly face the main European competitors by offering a luxury product that combines high technology and performance.
In addition, GWM has also revealed that some models from the Tank line, like the recently launched Tank 300 in Brazil, may be equipped with the new V8 engine.
Although GWM has not yet revealed all the details about the V8 engine and its plans for it, it is clear that the automaker is ready to surprise the market.
GWM has been standing out for its innovation and constant pursuit of technological solutions that cater to both the Chinese market and global consumers.
