International Movement Of A Brazilian Black Hawk In KC-390 Freighter Marks Visible Start Of A Technological Modernization Program Involving New Suite Of Digital Avionics, Operational Upgrade Of The Fleet And Integration Of Strategic Capabilities Of Transport Aviation And Rotary-Wing Of The Brazilian Air Force.
The Brazilian Air Force embarked on March 4 the H-60 Black Hawk helicopter with registration FAB 8909 in a KC-390 Millennium at São Paulo Air Base, in Guarulhos, to take it to Huntsville, Alabama, where the aircraft will undergo the first modernization cycle of the model in the FAB fleet.
The work will be carried out by the American company ACE Aeronautics and has as its main focus the installation of the Garmin G5000H avionics suite.
According to the FAB, the helicopter will serve as a prototype for the program and is scheduled to return to Brazil in mid-2027.

FAB Logistics Takes Black Hawk Abroad Inside A KC-390
The operation involved military personnel from the São Paulo Aeronautical Material Park, the structure of São Paulo Air Base, support from a military member from Santa Maria Air Base, and the crew of the First Squadron of the First Transport Group, the Gordo Squadron.

The embarkation of an H-60 in the cargo compartment of the KC-390 is already described by the FAB as a consolidated procedure, which reinforces the Brazilian freighter’s capability to transport rotary-wing assets in longer-range logistical missions.
Modernization Of The Cockpit With Garmin G5000H System
The FAB 8909 will be the first aircraft in the fleet to receive the Garmin G5000H, a system that replaces the previous configuration with an integrated digital architecture, featuring capabilities aimed at navigation, situational awareness, and reducing crew workload.
In an announcement released in December 2025, Garmin reported that the solution chosen for the Brazilian UH-60L includes four high-resolution 12-inch displays, four touchscreen controllers, and integration capability with sensors and mission systems used in military operations.
The manufacturer also states that the package incorporates tools such as HTAWS, a terrain awareness and warning system, synthetic vision technology for helicopters, and an integrated ADS-B Out solution.
In practice, this is an upgrade aimed not only at renewing the cockpit but also at addressing the obsolescence of legacy equipment in aircraft that remain in intensive use.
Commenting on the dispatch of FAB 8909 to the United States, the H-60 Project coordinator at PAMA-SP, Aviator Captain Gabriel Sampaio Duarte, stated that the modernization should represent “a significant technological and operational leap for rotary-wing aviation”.
In the same assessment, he highlighted that the upgrade tends to solve current and future obsolescence issues in an aircraft that still has the capability to remain in service for many years.
Role Of KC-390 Millennium In The Transport Operation
The transport of the helicopter inside the KC-390 Millennium draws attention to the operational symbolism of the mission.
In addition to taking a rotary-wing platform for modernization overseas, the FAB again demonstrated one of the most explored capabilities of the Embraer freighter: the flexibility to transport troops, vehicles, pallets, and also smaller aircraft.
Embraer’s institutional material lists the transport of helicopters the size of the Black Hawk among the aircraft’s operational possibilities.

In the case of the H-60, this combination between multirole helicopter and tactical freighter extends the logistical reach of the Brazilian Air Force.
Rather than relying on the helicopter’s own movement abroad, with stops and more complex planning, embarkation on the KC-390 allows concentrating security, speed, and control of the operation in a single platform.
It was precisely this arrangement that the FAB emphasized when reporting that the prior preparation of the helicopter was decisive in ensuring a safe embarkation before departure for the United States.
The director of PAMA-SP, Aviator Colonel Wagner Takemi Motoyama, attributed the success of the initial stage to the joint work of the teams involved in the logistical operation.
According to him, the military played a key role in preparing the aircraft, which ensured the helicopter’s embarkation on the KC-390 within the parameters required for this type of transport.
Modernization Program Of The FAB Black Hawk Fleet
The dispatch of FAB 8909 comes at a time when the Brazilian program for the Black Hawk has gained greater dimension.
On December 2, 2025, Garmin announced that the Brazilian Air Force had selected the G5000H, through ACE Aeronautics, to modernize the cockpits of 24 UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters.
The company also reported that this is the fifth military program to adopt the solution in helicopters of this type through ACE.
This data broadens the context of the mission now carried out by the FAB.
Although the air force’s statement regarding FAB 8909 treats the aircraft as a prototype of the fleet’s technological update and points to a return in mid-2027, the later announcement from Garmin indicates that the program has come to encompass 24 UH-60L.
Thus, the flight of the helicopter to Huntsville clearly marks the visible beginning of a broader modernization of the FAB’s rotary-wing aviation.
Use Of The H-60 Black Hawk In Operational Missions In Brazil
The relevance of this update increases when observing the recurrent employment of the H-60 in real operations of the Brazilian Air Force.
The FAB associates the model with search and rescue missions, troop infiltration and exfiltration, air logistics transport, and support in humanitarian and environmental scenarios.
The air force itself highlights that its fleet of rotary-wing aircraft operates with platforms such as the H-60 Black Hawk and H-36 Caracal in different types of mission across the national territory.
In this context, the replacement of the analog cockpit with a more modern digital suite tends to directly impact the operational routine of the squadrons depending on the H-60.
The modernization does not alter the strategic role of the Black Hawk in the FAB, but updates the means available to ensure that this role continues to be executed with greater safety, standardization, and interoperability in the coming years.
