Brazilian Navy Purchases Warship HMS Bulwark from the United Kingdom, Strengthening Military Operations and Oversight of the Blue Amazon.

The Brazilian Navy announced on Wednesday (09/10/25) the purchase of the HMS Bulwark, a warship from the Royal Navy, enhancing its capability to operate in military and humanitarian missions.

The contract was signed in London by Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa, General Director of Material for the Navy, and Vice Admiral Martin Connell, from the British Navy.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed, but the acquisition confirms Brazil’s commitment to modernizing its fleet of strategic vessels.

The HMS Bulwark, measuring 170 meters in length, is designed for multiple types of operations.

According to Navy officials, in addition to amphibious missions, the ship can be employed in humanitarian actions, supply transport, and support in public disaster situations.

Operational Potential of the HMS Bulwark

With space for 290 crew members and a capacity to transport up to 710 military personnel, the vessel becomes a strategic asset for Brazil.

In addition to conventional military missions, the ship will be used for oversight and protection of the Blue Amazon, an area rich in natural resources such as minerals and oil, often targeted by international espionage.

In April 2023, the Brazilian Navy had to prevent the presence of a German ship conducting unauthorized research in the region of the Rio Grande Elevation, highlighting the importance of strengthening maritime surveillance.

Training and Arrival of the Vessel

Currently, the ship is undergoing a complete overhaul in Plymouth, United Kingdom.

In September, 48 Brazilian military personnel will board for training and oversight of the work, while in November, another 44 professionals will be trained to operate the vessel.

The remaining crew will head to England next year for final commissioning.

The forecast is that the HMS Bulwark will arrive in Brazil in 2026, fully revitalized.

Technical Specifications of the Ship

The HMS Bulwark has:

Overall length: 176 m;

Molded beam: 28.9 m;

Draught loaded: 7.1 m;

Displacement: 18,500 t;

Flight deck: operation of up to 2 large aircraft;

Maximum speed: 18 knots;

Range: 8,000 nautical miles;

Crew: 290;

Troop transport capacity: up to 710 military personnel.

A Strategic Reinforcement for the Brazilian Navy

The acquisition of the HMS Bulwark represents not only the modernization of the fleet but also an expansion of rapid response capabilities in emergencies and national defense.

According to experts, the vessel will enable the Brazilian Navy to operate more efficiently in both military operations and humanitarian missions, consolidating the country’s presence in strategic areas of the South Atlantic.

Furthermore, the arrival of the ship strengthens cooperation between the United Kingdom and Brazil in the naval field, aligning technology and advanced training to ensure maritime security and sovereignty.
