Away From The City And The Urban Rhythm, A Resident Of Franca Built A Routine Based On Spring Water, Home Garden, And Silence, Maintaining An Ever-Rare Way Of Life In The Interior Of São Paulo

The day hasn’t even brightened when Mr. Ênio is already up. Without an alarm, without a digital clock, and with no connection to the outside world, the routine begins early in the interior of Franca, São Paulo, about 400 kilometers from major urban centers. For decades, he has lived apart from urban life, without electricity, without internet, and without a refrigerator, sustained solely by what he plants, raises, and collects from his own land.

The journey to his home requires hours of travel on highways, dirt roads, sugarcane harvest areas, and flooded sections. On days of heavy rain, like the one recorded during the visit, access becomes even more difficult, forcing visitors to leave their cars and continue on foot. The geographic distance exactly reflects the lifestyle he has chosen to lead.

This information was recorded during an in-person visit and field recording, conducted after approximately six hours of travel, under heavy rain and wind, according to the accounts of those involved.

A Simple House, Two Rooms, And No Outlets On The Walls

Mr. Ênio’s home is small and functional. Built from blocks, with the help of family members, it has only two rooms: a bedroom and a kitchen. There is no electricity, so the lighting comes from a gas lantern, which replaced the old kerosene lamp for practicality.

Without a refrigerator, the organization of food follows traditional methods. Meats are fried and preserved in their own fat, while eggs, roots, and vegetables are consumed according to daily production. Everything is designed to function without electricity.

In the bedroom, there are few pieces of furniture, simple clothes, and one item that organizes time: a physical calendar, used to mark the days. This was how he confirmed his age and date of birth: May 1, 1945.

Spring Water, Outdoor Shower, And Wood Stove

The water used daily comes from a natural spring, collected through a hose and directed to a water tank. According to the resident, winter never runs out of water, even during more critical periods. On rainy days, the flow increases, ensuring a supply.

The shower takes place outside the house. The water is heated on the wood stove and used in a simple system, integrated into the natural environment. For him, showering outdoors is sufficient, functional, and comfortable.

Garden, Animal Raising, And A Daily Repeated Routine

A large part of the land houses an <strong_extensive garden, fenced to prevent animals from entering. In this space, Mr. Ênio grows beans, cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas, peppers, and other foods, in quantities sufficient for his own consumption. According to him, production often exceeds daily needs.

Additionally, he raises chickens, dogs, cats, and ducks, which are part of his routine. He divides his day between caring for the animals, organizing the space, and working in the garden. He does not follow strict schedules, only maintains repetition and consistency.

A Conscious Choice And A Life Far From Noise

From time to time, usually every two weeks, he goes to the city to resolve specific issues. He keeps in touch with brothers and family but prefers to live away from urban interaction. According to his own account, he made this decision to not disturb anyone and preserve tranquility.

Despite his advanced age, he claims to maintain good health and rarely falls ill. For him, living far from urban centers does not mean loneliness but rather balance. While the world speeds up outside, Mr. Ênio sustains a stable, quiet, and self-sufficient life.

To What Extent Does Living Away From Society Represent A Renunciation And When Does This Choice Transform Into The Most Fulfilled Way Of Existing For Those Who Have Found Peace Away From The City?
