Built Stone by Stone by a Reclusive Resident for More Than Three Decades, the House on the Cliff in Xiangxi, Hunan, Brings Together Bridge, Stone Garden, Temple, and Complete View of the Village Below.

In the depths of the Xiangxi mountains, in China’s Hunan province, a house on the cliff that resembles an ancient temple draws the attention of those arriving at the remote village of Jinluohe. From afar, the building carved into the rock blends in with a traditional sanctuary, perched on a lonely peak with an open view of the valley and the houses built along the crystal-clear river.

As the residents recount the story, the scene takes on another dimension. The construction does not belong to a religious institution, but to the life project of a single man. An elderly recluse spent about 30 years sculpting the cliff, opening trails, raising stone walls, and pulling water from the mountain to transform the place into a private paradise that he dreamed of sharing with more people from the village.

From Imaginary “Temple” to True Home of the Old Artisan

Those approaching via the stone road, which was also hand-built, understand why many think it is a temple.

The house on the cliff has gates, inscriptions on the stones, a small hall with statues of deities and phrases engraved on walls and pillars, as well as a tower named by the resident himself, who even recorded the year 1998 on one of the carved rocks.

Residents’ accounts describe a man who never married and chose to live in isolation in the mountains but without breaking ties with the community. He dreamed of “creating a paradise” in the heights and, at the same time, benefiting the village of Jinluohe.

He participated in the construction of a bridge and a tower in the lower part, appealing for residents to join fundraising campaigns.

At the same time, he climbed the slope daily, using a hoe, hammer, and his own hands to advance a few more meters in the work.

Stone Road, Bridge over Water, and Access to Paradise in the Mountain

Access to the house on the cliff begins in a village surrounded by clean water, small bridges, traditional houses, and farms. The trail ascends along a road of stones fitted one by one, bordered by gardens, peppers, cabbages, second-crop rice, and medicinal plants.

In several stretches, trash bins and simple sanitation structures appear, evidence that the old man also thought about how to keep the mountain usable for visitors.

Further up, the path becomes narrow, steep, and slippery. There are sections where the passage was literally carved into the cliff and reinforced with overlapping stones, with a rudimentary wooden guardrail already marked by time.

At one point, the trail leads to a small temple with statues and inscriptions about helping others. At another, it passes under an improvised swing and through pipes buried in the ground, showing the infrastructure built to carry the spring water to the highest part of the peak.

The effort accumulated over decades is visible in every step, every wall, and every bend in the trail.

At the end of the climb, the upper gate and the structures of the house on the cliff appear, supported on an isolated peak surrounded by abysses.

Inside, the environment mixes elements of temple and rural residence. There is a bed, an electric rice cooker, a table, a cabinet with bowls, seasonings, brooms, a saw, hangers, and a brazier for warmth and cooking.

On the main wall, there are religious images, including figures associated with Buddhism and Taoism, as well as a God of Wealth positioned beside them.

Outside, the highlight is the large porch that serves as an observation platform. There, the elderly man built a rock garden, bonsais, miniature pines, and even a small pool fed by a constant flow of water, channeled from the spring through pipes that rise up the cliff.

The surplus spills over the edge, reinforcing the sensation of a suspended oasis. Ancient trees provide shade and help compose the retreat scene envisioned by the resident, who lived for more than thirty years at the top, among the songs of birds, pure air, and the wide view of the village below.

Legacy of a Simple Life Dedicated to the Village of Jinluohe

Residents say that the old man passed away in silence after a life of material poverty and continuous work.

The house on the cliff remains closed in some points, but still bears clear marks of his daily life: stacked books, long benches handmade, tables carved from stone, and wooden details that support entire structures on the edge of the abyss. For many, the work became a symbol of perseverance and the bond between the village and the mountain.

At the same time, Jinluohe itself receives part of this legacy. The bridge, the tower, the monument with the phrase “may this merit benefit the people,” and the stone road help tell the story of a resident who dedicated all his strength and years of life to a specific piece of land, trying to transform it into a shared paradise.

Those who visit today see a postcard landscape, with traditional houses, a transparent river, and surrounding mountains, but also the memory of someone who spent decades shaping this scene with his own hands.

In light of this story, there is an inevitable curiosity for those who know the region and the journey of this solitary resident: would you have the courage to live in a house on the cliff like this, isolated in the mountains for decades, in exchange for a private paradise with a view of the entire village?
