Gerdau Launched A New Company That Will Develop Graphene Applications. The Goal With The New Investment In The Ore Will Be To Enter Strategic Sectors
Gerdau, the largest steel producer in Brazil, announced the creation of a new company in the graphene segment. The company invested in the ore with the aim of adding more value for its customers and entering strategic areas across various sectors. The announcement came last Thursday (04/15), emphasizing that Gerdau Graphene, the name given to the new company, also aims to become a reference in the marketing of the ore.
The New Graphene Company from Gerdau
Gerdau Graphene will operate independently from the steel business unit and aims to become a reference company for large-scale application of graphene in Brazil and for the marketing of products derived from the ore. The company is also committed to entering the global market.
The ore has advantages in mechanical properties, such as weight reduction and decreased friction, greater lubrication efficiency, and higher thermal and electrical conductivity.

Many employers do not know, but the law guarantees domestic workers a 25% increase in salary during trips, 50% for overtime, 20% for night shifts, and 17 additional benefits that can lead to labor lawsuits if not paid.
Gerdau’s new company already holds a significant position in the ore market, becoming a major developer of graphene in the Americas. The company, which is headquartered in São Paulo and has a branch in the United States, plans to provide more technology in the construction, industrial and automotive lubricants, rubber, thermoplastics, paints, and sensors in Brazil and North American countries.
The New Business Plan of Gerdau and the Use of the Ore
Gerdau Graphene is part of the new business unit of Gerdau called Gerdau Next, which will operate independently from the steel business unit. Alexandre de Toledo Corrêa, general manager of Gerdau Graphene, stated in a note that the first customer for the use of the ore will be Gerdau itself and its steel mills.
Juliano Prado, vice president of Gerdau, highlighted that since 2019, the company has been working with graphene in Manchester, England. According to him, graphene is one of the most robust products ever found and one of the best conductors available in the market, with many potential applications.
Gerdau also recently announced that it will invest about R$ 1 billion in the production and marketing of special steels this year. The investment amount will be used to modernize and expand operations to meet the positive outlooks in the automotive and mechanical equipment sectors. The largest steel producer in Brazil stated in a statement that this amount is part of the global investment announced in February, amounting to R$ 3.5 billion. Due to the economic impact of the pandemic, some of the resources from the plan are related to the 2020 plan, which was postponed.
The Use and Properties of Graphene
Graphene is an ore composed solely of carbon, in which the atoms are bonded to form a hexagonal structure. In other words, it refers to a crystalline form of carbon, just like diamond and graphite.
Due to its unique characteristics, the ore has become the highest electrical conductor today, one of the best thermal conductors, and one of the most resistant materials. Besides its extremely high flexibility and water resistance, its optical properties also allow nearly 98% of incident light to pass through.
According to the general director of Gerdau Graphene, the applications of graphene go beyond anti-corrosive coatings and polymer composites used in the automotive and construction markets, as well as in the chemical, plastic, and rubber sectors. Alexandre also stated that Gerdau Graphene has started to operate as an integration center for the entire chain and existing research in Brazil and worldwide to accelerate and promote its application in the processes and products of customers.
