With 64 Years of Global Leadership in Niobium Technology, CBMM Announced Today an Investment in a Singapore-Based Company Dedicated to Graphene Technology
Rio de Janeiro, November 21, 2019 – CBMM (Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração) announced that it signed on Thursday (21) the contract for investments in graphene that will allow the company to become a minority shareholder of 2DM, a Singapore-based company dedicated to graphene technology. The contract signed by the Brazilian company and the Singapore firm reinforces the journey of the global leader in niobium technology in developing innovative solutions for its customers.
CBMM, located in Araxá-MG, discovered the potential synergistic applications of graphene – since the two-dimensional material can be used in segments common to niobium, such as automotive (including batteries for electric vehicles), construction and infrastructure, and electro-electronic applications, among others.
Thanks to decades of investments in its processing technology and niobium application program, CBMM has achieved the position of global market leader, and its history is directly linked to the development of this metal. It is based on this experience that the company begins to explore synergistic opportunities with niobium, the element on which its current production relies.

It then decided to invest in the company 2DM, founded within the National University of Singapore, which is the leading research center for graphene in Asia. The versatile potential of the material, derived from graphite, has been discussed over the years, and its capabilities as an industrial additive to improve the properties of structures have stood out among advanced materials. A protagonist among 2D materials, graphene is recognized for its capabilities as an energy conductor, thermal properties, strength, lightness, among other features that position it as one of the most promising materials for the next decade.
With this partnership, CBMM’s central goal is to leverage all possible synergies between graphene and niobium to expand solutions for its clients. The company believes it can contribute through its recognized competencies in material technology development and its applications, market expansion, and the development of globally present clients.
