Niterói City Hall Project Will Favor Naval Industry Recovery and Port Activities, Funding Would Come from Royalties
The City Hall of Niterói has just announced that it will carry out a dredging project in the São Lourenço Canal, which will increase its draft from 7 meters to 12 meters.
With the dredging, the port will have the capacity to receive large vessels, increasing repair activities and the offshore sector, as well as expanding port activities.
The project is budgeted at R$ 200 million and would be carried out with funds from the royalties that the municipality receives.
The project schedule is being discussed among municipal secretaries Giovanna Victer (Finance) and Luiz Paulino Moreira Leite (Economic Development) and the director of the National Institute of Hydrographic Research (INPH), Domênico Accetta.

Essential Project
Niterói’s Secretary of Finance stated that “The dredging of the São Lourenço Canal is one of the main factors for the recovery of the naval industry and the resumption of jobs in the sector”.
“We want to boost the economy and, above all, create new job opportunities in the city. To do this, we will make an investment using funds from royalties. The return for the Municipality will be enormous, both in job creation and in technology, reopening a market that is facing serious difficulties”.
This is not the only action taken by the municipality aimed at recovering shipbuilding, which for many years played a prominent role in the local economy.
The City Hall is promising to present a Strategic Development Plan for the Naval Sector in August of this year, a study conducted in partnership with Nit Negócios, an investment promotion agency in Niterói.
The purpose of the study is to analyze investments and the entire potential of the naval industry for the next 20 years, and NIT Negócios’ participation is essential.
According to its director Marcelo Haddad, “With this perspective, we will already advance with the prospecting of nautical industries and shipowners from various nationalities for the city. It will be the time for commercial capture”.
