The Braskem Petrochemicals of the Odebrecht Group is paralyzed by the Federal Public Ministry of Alagoas and is studying a change of state

While the MPF-AL investigates the causes and damage to the environment and property in the Pinheiro, Mutange and Bebedouro neighborhoods, Braskem will have all its activities paralyzed, the paralysis took place on May 9th.
Petroquímica was carrying out mining activities in Maceió, Alagoas, when a report by the National Geological Survey pointed out signs of soil compromise since 2018, which caused the Court of Justice of Alagoas to order a “preventive” freeze of up to US$ 25,45 million in the company's financial assets.

Worried about the situation of the company, which is buying raw material from abroad to honor contracts, president Fernando Musa declared that in six months if the company's activities do not return to normal, the company should leave the state of Alagoas.

Braskem's main activities affected by the stoppage are the PVC industry, which supplies raw material to second and third generation industries in the country's plastics chain, rock salt mining at the Maceió deposit, which is considered one of the largest in Latin America and the production of dichloroethane, the basis for the production of PVC and caustic soda.

The change of state would make it possible for the company and the transfer of its activities to the border between Espírito Santo and the state of Bahia, a place strategically designed for the logistics of Porto do Açu.
The company's president also declared that the change is not blackmail with the state of Alagoas, but a matter of survival.

Damage to the State

When the change is confirmed, the state of Alagoas may have a decrease in revenue of up to 30% of the gross domestic product, a fact that is already frightening local authorities.
Braskem has operated in the state for forty-four years and the company's shares on the stock exchange have fluctuated significantly with the ban and stoppage of activities.

According to the federal prosecutor, Niedja Kaspary, there was a failure in the inspection of the company by the IMA (Environment Institute) of Alagoas, as for the governor, Renan Filho, there was nothing abnormal in the inspection, what is certain is that everyone is waiting for an outcome. favorable to the state.

Brazilian oil company Petrobras has awarded McDermott a contract for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of subsea risers and flowlines for the first phase of the Sépia field, offshore Brazil.
