With the Railway Project Set to Be Completed, the Connection Between the Ports in SC Promises to Revolutionize Cargo Transport in the State.
Hold onto your hats, because the long-awaited railway project is entering its final stretch! Yes, the long-anticipated R$ 1.6 billion railway connection between the ports in SC is about to become a reality, promising a revolution in cargo flow and the economy of Santa Catarina.
The drafting of the executive project for the construction of the railway that will connect two port complexes in Santa Catarina is almost complete. The railway project in question foresees a railway line with an extension of 62 kilometers, connecting Araquari — which already has a branch to São Francisco do Sul — to Navegantes, a city that forms a port hub with Itajaí.
Railway Has Been a Topic of Investment in SC
Another railway is in the project phase in Santa Catarina, connecting Chapecó to Correia Pinto, with a length of 319 kilometers. The execution of the railway project between the ports began at the end of 2022. So far, R$ 5.7 million of the R$ 7.2 million projected in the contract, which is valid until February 2025, has been invested.

The estimated total cost is around US$ 300 million, equivalent to R$ 1.6 billion, an amount that will be updated at the end of the executive project. In 2022, it was estimated that the new railway between the ports in SC could transport 15 million tons per year. For comparison, the Port of São Francisco do Sul handled a record 16.9 million tons last year.
Construction of the New Railway Intended to Serve the Port Terminals
At the moment, there is still no definition on the source of funds for the construction of the new railway intended to serve the port terminals. However, with the project’s completion expected next year, it is hoped that this process will be accelerated, further boosting the development of the ports in SC.
How Many Ports Are There in SC?
In addition to this railway project, Santa Catarina has five main ports that play a vital role in Brazil’s foreign trade. Among them are the Port of Itajaí, the largest in the state and one of the most important for container movements in the country, and the Port of Navegantes (Portonave), its neighboring direct competitor, also specializing in containers. Additionally, the Port of São Francisco do Sul is crucial for the export of grains, cellulose, and general cargo, while the Port of Imbituba stands out in the handling of grains, coal, and containers.
Besides the four largest, Santa Catarina also has the Port of Laguna, smaller and primarily focused on fishing and smaller operations. These ports, distributed along the Santa Catarina coast, are extremely important for the logistics and economy of the state, efficiently connecting local production to the international market.
With this network of strategic ports, Santa Catarina establishes itself as one of the largest logistics hubs in Brazil. In light of this, could the investment in railways to connect these ports further transform the economy of Santa Catarina and the flow of exports in the country?
