With the increase in temperature and the drought, Itaipu hydroelectric plant increases energy generation due to the great demand of consumption
The Itaipu hydroelectric plant, located on the Paraná River, comprising part of the state of Paraná and part of Paraguay, increased its power generation due to the drought and intense heat in several locations in Brazil. Itaipu Binacional needed to increase power generation for two days – October 2nd and 6th. According to the hydroelectric plant, the purpose of the action is to help the country's electrical system in the face of an unforeseen demand.

The demand was to meet the National Interconnected System (SIN) during a peak of high energy consumption on days with high temperatures, in which several cities in Brazil reached 40°C and also due to the drought. On October 6, the plant increased its power output by two hours to 1.200 megawatts. This amount is close to the total power of the Furnas plant in Rio Grande, in the state of Minas Gerais, of 1.216 MW.
