The first battle Petrobras has already lost, in response to a lawsuit by the Federal Public Ministry of Sergipe, the Federal Court determined that the company draw up an emergency plan to combat corals harmful to the environment of the Coral-sol species on the company's platforms that operate in Sergipe waters.

According to the decision of the Sergipe Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, Ibama will monitor the process and execution of Petrobras' plan and will have to issue quarterly reports.

Petrobras and the sun coral

Originally from the Pacific Ocean, the sun coral was first observed in the 1980s on oil platforms in the Campos Basin, in Rio de Janeiro. Initially, sun coral invaded rocky shores along the coast of five Brazilian states: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo and Bahia, and later, it was reported by the IBAMA on oil platforms in Sergipe and, more recently, on oil platforms on the Abrolhos bank in the state of Espirito Santo.

the sun coral is an efficient invader, with fast growth, precocious reproduction, for establishing or invading new environments on the Brazilian coast, attesting to its invasive ability.

The sun coral modifies its own environment, enhancing and promoting its permanence, producing harmful chemical substances and excluding the native fauna and flora.

In March 2014, Petrobras acknowledged the existence of the sun coral, but refused to promote measures to control and eradicate the species. The company declared, at the time, that the effects were still unknown and that no damage to the environment or human health was found that would justify an action by the company.

Petrobras had all of its arguments denied by Ibama, which determined that the company should present an emergency plan and a timetable for eradicating the sun coral within 30 days.
