Kymco, in Partnership with Suzuki, Leader in the Motorcycle Segment, Develops New Electric Motorcycles That Offer the Riding Experience of Combustion Models, Including Manual Transmission.
Recognized in Brazil through its partnership with Suzuki by the JTZ Motors Group, Kymco is famous for its Scooter AK550, a premium 550cc model. Currently, there is great anticipation for the launch of its new electric motorcycle, the Downtown 350 with 350cc, which was unveiled at the 2023 Interlagos Festival. However, the highlight is on two innovative electric motorcycles that Kymco plans to launch, both equipped with a manual transmission, promising a new riding experience.
Meet the Two New Electric Motorcycles from Kymco and Suzuki
The great expectation, in fact, is this evolution, which promises riders the sensation of riding a combustion motorcycle, with the ability to shift gears, while riding an electric motorcycle.
The SuperNEX and RevoNEX models will be the novelties for the debut of this new type of electric motorcycle with manual transmission. In fact, the project for these two models has faced some delays. The original forecast for launching these electric motorcycles was in 2021. Now the brand is promising a launch in 2025.

The excitement surrounding these electric motorcycles from Kymco in partnership with Suzuki is connected to the promise of a unique riding experience, very similar to traditional combustion motorcycles.
Incredibly, the brand highlights a system that simulates a conventional manual transmission, involving a pedal-operated gear and a clutch lever on the left hand. However, a recent discovery from a patent application reveals that Kymco’s gear system is not exactly what one might imagine.
Understand How the Manual Transmission Works for Kymco’s Electric Motorcycles
Instead of relying on a traditional clutch and gearbox, Kymco’s system in partnership with Suzuki features an intricate simulation, connected to control units that govern the behavior of the electric motorbike’s propulsor.
Additionally, an ingenious sound effect system has been developed by the brand to convincingly imitate a manual transmission. However, this does not detract from the merit of Kymco and Suzuki’s system. On the contrary, it only demonstrates the brand’s desire to please a large portion of riders who dislike the automatic style of acceleration in electric motorcycles.
Unlike combustion motorcycles, where the presence of a multi-speed manual transmission is quite common, electric motorcycles, due to the nature of electric motors, do not require this component.
Electric motors deliver maximum torque instantly, making the complexity and weight of a clutch and gearbox unnecessary, especially when already dealing with the size and weight of electric batteries.
Learn More About the Kymco and Suzuki Patent
The simulated gear ratios prove to be pre-programmed maps designed for the electric motor, providing various modes to adapt to different riding conditions. Lower gears are developed to prioritize torque at low speeds and acceleration, while the clutch offers a natural way to engage or disengage traction. The benefits extend to deceleration, where each simulated gear may have distinct configurations for load regeneration.
When pulling the clutch lever, the regeneration effect is instantly disengaged, allowing for a smooth deceleration.
Shifting to a lower simulated manual gear intensifies engine braking, replicating the characteristic experience of combustion motorcycles. Furthermore, the sound effect system of Kymco and Suzuki’s electric motorcycle plays an essential role, providing riders with an auditory indication of the selected gear and riding mode.
