Toyota’s global strategy bets on a compact SUV with off-road DNA, multiple visual configurations, and a robust base for emerging markets, while the launch advances in Asia and raises expectations about a possible arrival in Brazil without official confirmation from the manufacturer so far.

Toyota has put the Land Cruiser FJ on sale in Thailand and simultaneously presented four customization proposals to reinforce the off-road vocation of the new utility vehicle.

The model arrives with a ladder frame chassis, partial 4×4 traction, rear differential lock, and a 2.7 gasoline engine, in a strategy that seeks to combine visual appeal, robustness, and modularity in a segment currently occupied by few rivals with this profile.

For now, the confirmed debut is for Asian markets.

Toyota has already announced that the launch in Japan is planned for mid-2026 and has started selling the SUV in Thailand, but has not officially announced the arrival of the vehicle in Brazil.

So far, what exists for the Brazilian market are sector analyses about the potential for importation or regional production, without confirmation from the manufacturer.

Compact SUV with traditional utility base

Although it has a more adventurous use proposal, the Land Cruiser FJ does not follow the recipe of the more common monocoque SUVs in the market.

The model uses the IMV architecture, the same structural family associated with the Hilux Champ, and bets on solutions designed for durability on rough terrain and simplified maintenance.

Toyota itself emphasizes that the platform has been refined to ensure ground clearance, approach angle, and suspension articulation compatible with off-road use.

In terms of dimensions, the utility vehicle measures 4.575 meters in length, 1.855 meters in width, 1.960 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.58 meters, with a cabin for five occupants.

This places it longer than the Corolla Cross, but with a wheelbase closer to that of compact SUVs, which helps explain the proposal to combine a robust visual size with maneuverability on trails and urban areas.

The manufacturer also reports that the wheelbase is 270 millimeters shorter than that of the Land Cruiser 250 and that the minimum turning radius is 5.5 meters.

In practice, this configuration seeks to deliver more agility in tight spaces without sacrificing the typical behavior of a traditional utility vehicle.

2.7 Engine and 4×4 Traction Reinforce Off-Road Proposal

Under the hood, the Land Cruiser FJ uses the 2TR-FE 2.7 gasoline engine, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota reports a maximum power of 120 kW, equivalent to 163 metric hp, and torque of 246 Nm.

In some international coverage, the set appears rounded to 161 or 166 hp, depending on the conversion standard adopted, but the official figure released by the brand is 120 kW.

The traction system is of the part-time 4WD type with rear differential lock, in addition to features such as Auto Limited Slip Differential and 2nd Start Mode.

With this package, Toyota aims to position the FJ as a more serious alternative for those seeking real off-road capability, not just adventurous visuals.

In the global presentation of the model, the company also highlighted structural reinforcements under the floor and greater body rigidity.

The proposal is clear: to preserve the historical reputation of the Land Cruiser family in reliability, durability, and off-road performance, now in a smaller format aimed at a broader audience.

Four Versions Highlight Distinct Usage Profiles

In Thailand, Toyota took the opportunity of the launch to showcase four visual interpretations of the utility vehicle: Meridian, Legendary, Nature Explorer, and Street Cruiser.

Instead of creating four distinct mechanical versions, the brand used the model to show different paths of customization, combining original accessories and items developed for specific uses.

The Meridian is the one that most closely resembles the classic image of a 4×4 trail vehicle.

The configuration features gray finishes, black applications, a roof rack, snorkel, underbody protection, and tires designed for rough terrain.

It also includes springs and shock absorbers prepared for more severe use, reinforcing the focus on dirt paths and low-traction situations.

The Legendary, on the other hand, adopts a more nostalgic appeal.

The body in Sandstone Yellow, the darkened rectangular grille, and the 17-inch silver wheels evoke the visual legacy of the Land Cruiser line.

It is the least extreme proposal of the group, but still maintains all-terrain tires and elements that preserve the utility identity of the SUV.

Targeted at those who prioritize urban style, the Street Cruiser swaps part of the off-road preparation for a set with 20-inch wheels, lowered suspension, asphalt tires, and red Brembo brake calipers.

The package also includes an integrated spoiler, side steps, and a rear rack for bicycles or small motorcycles, in a more visual than functional interpretation for heavy trails.

The Nature Explorer, in turn, tries to bring the FJ closer to the camping and outdoor travel universe.

The combination of blue paint with a white roof, upper rack, side awning, rooftop tent, and auxiliary lighting speaks directly to the audience that uses the car as a base for leisure in open areas.

Accessory Packages and Price Positioning

In addition to the concept cars, Toyota presented three accessory packages for the Thai market.

The Unbound Explorer costs 32,450 baht and includes items such as snorkel, underbody protection, and more prominent fenders.

The Urban Unique is priced at 32,700 baht and adds a distinctive grille, spare tire cover, external trims, and front and rear cameras in 2K resolution.

At the top is the Freedom Journey, priced at 36,400 baht, with a roof platform among the main components.

The Land Cruiser FJ is sold in Thailand in a single 4WD 2.7 configuration, with an initial promotional price of 1,269,000 baht and a full price of 1,289,000 baht.

Among the disclosed equipment are a digital panel, multimedia center, Toyota Safety Sense package, and a cabin for five passengers.

The price range positions it close to the more expensive versions of medium SUVs in some markets.

Possible Arrival in Brazil Still Without Confirmation

In the Brazilian market, Toyota has not officially linked the Land Cruiser FJ to any launch plans.

The point that fuels the debate is the IMV base, already considered strategic for emerging markets and associated with the Hilux Champ.

Industry analysts see compatibility with a potential regional operation.

Still, there is a significant distance between industrial possibility and commercial decision.

The brand has not announced a schedule, local engine options, or arrival forecasts.

Thus, the safest scenario today is to treat the Land Cruiser FJ as a confirmed launch in Thailand and scheduled for Japan in 2026, but still without a defined official destination for Brazil.

Interest exists, the product positioning is clear, and the gap between urban SUVs and traditional utility vehicles remains open.
