Since October 2019, Scania, the Swedish truck, bus, and diesel engine manufacturer, has sold 70 gas trucks to various sectors, such as cosmetics and food. The truck received by Gerdau will be operated by Fagundes Construção e Mineração S.A.
Gerdau and Scania stated that “The first gas-powered truck in the history of mining in Brazil, a G 410 6×4 model, was delivered on Wednesday (15) by the WLM Itaipu dealership. The demonstration will start this Friday (18). For this, all Fagundes drivers will undergo specific training for operating the equipment, which will transport iron ore and waste”.

The Swedish manufacturer says that in Brazil, the truck is viable due to its potential for reducing consumption and CO2 emissions compared to diesel, via natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), or biomethane.
Silvio Munhoz, Sales Director for Scania Solutions in Brazil, said that “Scania has been leading the transition to a more sustainable transportation system. The gas truck has been a success in the road transport sector. Now, we will innovate once again in the off-road market. This is also a global first for the brand. We are sure that the results will surprise and set a trend”.
The refueling time is very short, around 15 minutes, which will not affect the availability of the truck for daily work. The expectation is that it will have a range of 10 cubic meters per hour, meaning it can travel between 250 and 300 kilometers.
