Amazon, Led By Billionaire Jeff Bezos, Announces Investment of Over US$ 4 Billion in Artificial Intelligence to Compete Directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Amazon, led by billionaire Jeff Bezos, announced last Friday a new investment of US$ 4 billion in Anthropic, an AI startup founded by former OpenAI executives, the owner of ChatGPT. With this addition, the total invested by the e-commerce giant in the company reaches US$ 8 billion.
Despite the significant investment, Jeff Bezos’ Amazon remains a minority investor in Anthropic, as reported by the San Francisco-based startup.
The partnership between the two companies intensifies with the inclusion of Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the main training and cloud partner for Anthropic. This move strengthens Anthropic, known for developing Claude, a chatbot that directly competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

The race for leadership in the generative artificial intelligence market is more competitive than ever, with forecasts indicating that the sector could reach revenue of US$ 1 trillion in the next decade.
Innovative Technologies and Exclusivity for AWS Customers
As part of the agreement, Anthropic will use AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its most advanced AI models. Additionally, AWS customers will have exclusive and early access to a new feature of Claude. This functionality will allow companies to customize the AI model with their own data, tailoring it to the specific needs of each business.
The exclusivity for AWS customers represents a significant competitive advantage, offering companies the possibility of achieving more accurate results aligned with their objectives.
Investment History of Jeff Bezos’ Amazon
The financial relationship between Amazon and Anthropic began in September 2023, with an initial investment of US$ 1.25 billion. Just six months later, Amazon added US$ 2.75 billion to the partnership, marking the largest external investment in its three-decade history. Even with the high amounts involved, Amazon does not have a seat on the Anthropic board, highlighting the startup’s independence in its strategic decisions.
The billion-dollar investment reinforces Amazon’s strategy to support promising startups while developing its own artificial intelligence technologies. In addition to Anthropic, other companies in the sector, such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta, have also intensified their investments in generative AI, recognizing its transformative potential across various industries.
New Features That Imitate Human Actions
Amazon’s investment comes at a time of accelerated innovation at Anthropic. In October, the startup revealed a groundbreaking functionality in its latest AI models. This technology allows AI agents to use computers in a human-like manner, performing complex tasks such as browsing websites, filling out forms, and operating software.
Jared Kaplan, Chief Scientist at Anthropic, highlighted the system’s ability to execute tasks that can involve dozens or even hundreds of steps. Companies like Asana, Canva, and Notion have already tested the technology, which has been in development since early 2024. Amazon had early access to these features, leveraging the partnership to explore practical applications before their commercial launch.
Growth and Expansion of Anthropic
In recent months, Anthropic has launched a series of products to consolidate its market position. In September, it introduced Claude Enterprise, a solution aimed at businesses looking to integrate AI at scale. In June, it debuted Claude 3.5 Sonnet, considered its most powerful model to date. In May, it launched an affordable plan for small businesses, significantly expanding its reach.
The interest of other major companies in the growth of Anthropic is also evident. In 2022, Google committed to investing US$ 2 billion in the startup, in addition to acquiring a 10% stake in the company. The agreement also included a significant cloud contract between the two parties, further strengthening Anthropic in the competitive AI sector.
Is ChatGPT Still in the Lead?
The race for leadership in generative artificial intelligence reflects the growing impact of this technology in the business world. Companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are investing billions to ensure their solutions are ahead in a market that promises to transform entire industries.
With the latest investment, Amazon reinforces its commitment to remaining relevant in this ever-evolving landscape. The partnership with Anthropic not only expands its capabilities in artificial intelligence but also demonstrates how strategic collaborations can accelerate innovations that benefit businesses and consumers.
