Light and Versatile Aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano May Be the Next Great Acquisition of the Navy for Close Air Support Operations. The Embraer Model Is Used by More Than 15 Countries and Stands Out for Operating in Difficult Terrain, with Low Cost and High Precision.

The Brazilian Navy is keeping an eye on the A-29 Super Tucano, a light combat turboprop aircraft, developed by Embraer. The possible acquisition aims to enhance the response power and air support to the Special Operations Forces (FOpEsp), especially in coastal, riverine, and hard-to-access scenarios.

Currently used by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and by more than 15 countries, the Super Tucano is known for its combination of simplicity, robustness, and firepower. It has already proven effective in actual combat, in missions ranging from armed patrol to interception of irregular aircraft.

A-29 Super Tucano: An Agile and Cost-Effective Combat Machine

The Super Tucano was designed for extreme environments. It features the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-68C engine, delivering 1,600 shp of power, ideal for low-altitude flights and controlled speed — perfect for close air support (CAS) missions.

Among the highlights of the A-29 are:

  • Maximum Speed: 590 km/h
  • Range: Up to 1,500 km
  • Endurance: More than 6 hours of flight
  • Armament: 12.7mm machine guns, rockets, laser-guided bombs, and air-to-surface missiles
  • Onboard Systems: FLIR (infrared sensor), integrated sight, electronic countermeasures, and state-of-the-art avionics

With a payload of 1,550 kg, the aircraft is highly configurable and can operate from both paved runways and improvised sites.

Why Does the Navy Want the A-29 Super Tucano?

The idea is to reinforce the response capability of the Navy’s elite troops, such as the Special Marine Corps Operations Battalion (BtlOpEspFuzNav) and the Combat Divers Group (GruMeC). In jungle missions, coastal, or riverine areas, the A-29 can provide direct air support with precision and mobility.

The aircraft can also operate in:

  • Operations against piracy and drug trafficking, intercepting fast boats
  • Armed patrol in maritime border areas
  • Preventive actions in asymmetric conflict zones

Integration with drones and naval systems is fully feasible, making the A-29 a key asset for joint operations on land and at sea.

A Proven and Approved Model

The A-29 Super Tucano is not a shot in the dark. It has already been chosen by air forces from Colombia, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Nigeria, and more recently Portugal and Panama. In Panama, for instance, four units were acquired in 2025 to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime in jungle areas.

In Brazil, the FAB has more than 60 units in operation and has already announced a fleet modernization plan, including updates to electronic systems and next-generation sensors. With these improvements, the A-29 will remain active for at least another 15 years.
