The Madeira Island Submarine Base (BSIM) will be the most modern naval base of the Brazilian Navy and will contribute to the preparation of naval assets, primarily submarines, in addition to providing logistical support to military organizations (OMs).

“Its [the base’s] responsibility is to provide mooring facilities, infrastructure, and administrative support to the vessels subordinate to the Submarine Force Command; security for the areas and facilities of the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, including maritime and land perimeters and common areas, in coordination with other OMs and companies based in the complex, as well as offering basic health support,” informs the Navy.

The Navy Commander, Admiral Ilques Barbosa Junior, emphasized the strategic dimension of the naval base. “Here will soon be the maximum strategic deterrent force of our country: conventional submarines with nuclear propulsion, submarines with diesel-electric propulsion, and also modern frigates and other means of supporting the strengthening of sovereignty and national development,” said Ilques at the ceremony attended by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque.

Last October, the Humaitá submarine was presented at the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, the second of four diesel-electric submarines planned to operate in defense of the Brazilian coast. The launch of Humaitá into the sea is scheduled for December this year.

The first submarine of Prosub, Riachuelo, was launched in 2018. The other two diesel-electric submarines, Tonelero and Angostura, are expected to be delivered in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

They are part of the Submarine Development Program, launched in 2008 in a strategic partnership with France, which plans an investment of R$ 35 billion.

In the construction of the vessels, priority is given to components manufactured in Brazil. According to the Navy, the Prosub strengthens several industrial sectors of strategic importance for national development.
