Putting Rivalry Aside, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk Surprise by Joining Forces to Face a Common Enemy in the Global Tech Scene.

The rivalry between Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), is one of the most well-known in the tech industry. Both billionaires have diverged on artificial intelligence, business models, and even sparked controversies that nearly led to physical confrontations.

However, something unexpected has been happening. This time, the two giants have agreed to join forces to challenge OpenAI, led by Sam Altman.

Mark Zuckerberg, the third richest man in the world, holds an impressive fortune of 207 billion dollars. Elon Musk, on the other hand, tops the list as the richest person on the planet, with a net worth of an incredible 444 billion dollars. Combined, the duo’s fortune amounts to 651 billion dollars.

The Target of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk: OpenAI and Its Controversial Transformation

At the beginning of December, Meta filed a request with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, asking for intervention against OpenAI’s intention to change its status from a non-profit organization to a for-profit company.

According to Zuckerberg, this change undermines the principles that supported OpenAI’s initial growth and harms the market.

OpenAI wants to change its status while keeping all the benefits that allowed it to reach its current point. This is wrong“, Meta stated in the letter.

In the letter, Meta highlights that OpenAI’s practices could cause “seismic impacts in Silicon Valley” and represent “a paradigm shift for tech startups“.

The company argues that this model could attract investors to create initially non-profit organizations, raise hundreds of millions of dollars in tax-exempt donations to fund research and development, and subsequently convert into for-profit companies when their technologies achieve commercial viability.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has previously stated that the change would be essential to attract more capital from investors, but this has raised concerns about transparency and the organization’s original commitment to promoting safe and accessible artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk’s Position

Elon Musk, who was one of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, decided to leave the organization in 2018. Since then, he has accused the entity of straying from its initial mission.

Elon Musk initiated a lawsuit in November to try to prevent OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit company.

In his petition, Elon Musk argued that OpenAI, along with Microsoft — its largest investor — is forming a for-profit monopoly, limiting competitiveness in the sector and harming emerging companies, including his own AI startup, xAI.

OpenAI’s and Microsoft’s anti-competitive behavior cannot be ignored. They are targeting competing initiatives directly“, Musk pointed out in his petition.

Response from OpenAI

The response from OpenAI was swift. In a post on the official blog of the organization, the company published a series of emails dated 2015. The messages show Musk debating with Sam Altman and other co-founders about the ideal legal format for establishing OpenAI.

A specific excerpt stands out: “Moreover, the structure does not seem ideal“, Musk wrote in response to Altman’s suggestion to create a non-profit organization.

The publication suggests that Musk supported, at some point, the idea of a model that would allow for profit-seeking.

OpenAI also highlighted that Elon Musk’s departure in 2018 was due to his lack of faith in the project’s success. “Musk believed that the probability of OpenAI’s success was zero,” the organization stated.

Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and OpenAI

In recent months, OpenAI has attracted attention both for the success of tools like ChatGPT and for the significant investments it has received.

In October, the company announced it had raised US$ 6.6 billion in a funding round, raising its market valuation to an impressive US$ 157 billion. Part of the deal requires OpenAI to become profitable within two years.

Meanwhile, Meta, headed by Mark Zuckerberg, plans to invest up to US$ 37 billion in AI infrastructure. Elon Musk, for his part, has already secured US$ 5 billion to expand his xAI.

The main argument of Meta and Musk is that OpenAI’s change in status creates a dangerous precedent. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the transition could encourage other startups to adopt similar models, using public incentives for profit-driven purposes.

Not holding OpenAI accountable could lead to the proliferation of similar enterprises“, Meta wrote in its letter.

The artificial intelligence market is in full expansion, and any changes in giants like OpenAI generate a cascading impact.

Smaller companies and innovative initiatives may struggle in the face of monopolies in the sector, directly affecting competitiveness.

Meta and xAI

Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are leading advances in artificial intelligence, but with distinct approaches and goals. While Meta focuses on connectivity and social interaction, Musk’s xAI seeks fundamental answers about the universe.

The Focus of Meta: AI in Daily Life and the Metaverse

Mark Zuckerberg has managed to transform Meta into one of the largest companies using artificial intelligence as the foundation of its initiatives. This is evident in the curation tools they’ve implemented on Facebook and Instagram, in the virtual assistants appearing in chats, and even in the content moderation, which is now almost entirely automated.

In the metaverse, AI has become a key component for creating these super immersive digital environments and personalizing interactions among users.

A notable moment was when they launched Llama 2, a highly advanced language model that, interestingly, is open source. It seems designed to compete with models like GPT-4.

The main idea of Meta is to democratize the use of artificial intelligence, helping companies and developers create their own solutions.

The Proposal of xAI: Science, Ethics, and Technological Integration

Elon Musk, on the other hand, founded xAI with a vision that diverges from traditional AI applications. The mission is ambitious: “to understand the true nature of the universe.”

Elon Musk, known for his criticisms regarding the lack of regulation in the field, wants AI aligned with human interests and transparent in its decisions.

Unlike Meta, xAI does not prioritize entertainment or social networking. Its focus is on scientific and ethical issues, but without abandoning the market.

The company integrates with Musk’s other initiatives, such as Tesla, bringing advances in autonomous driving, and Neuralink, which explores brain-machine interfaces.

Next Steps and Strategic Silence

So far, neither Musk, Zuckerberg, Altman, nor representatives from OpenAI have responded to requests for comment on the case. Meanwhile, the debate is intensifying among investors, regulators, and other players in the sector.

With billions of dollars at stake and an ongoing legal battle, the future of OpenAI could set new directions for global artificial intelligence.
