McDermott Has Already Mobilized a Team Based in Rio de Janeiro, and Brazilian Locar Is Expected to Use Its Pipe Launching Barge
McDermott has won the bid for the construction of the ultra-shallow section of the Rota 3 gas pipeline for Petrobras. This section will connect the pre-salt of the Santos Basin to the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj). The contract value has not been disclosed, and the scope of work includes project engineering and detailing, procurement, construction, and installation of 10 kilometers of a 24-inch rigid concrete-coated pipeline.
According to McDermott’s Senior Vice President for North, Central, and South America, Richaed Heo, Rota 3 is a vital development of the pre-salt that is crucial for the future of oil and gas production in Brazil.
He also clarified that the coordination and overall engineering of the project will be carried out by the company’s team in Rio de Janeiro with the support of the team from Houston.
The Rio office will execute this short-term project utilizing the expertise previously demonstrated in a series of recently completed EPCI projects in the country for Petrobras and other operators. The pipeline will have a total length of approximately 355 km, with 307 km for the offshore section and 48 km for the onshore section, with a flow rate of approximately 18 million m³ of natural gas per day.

Brazilian Locar Will Provide Services for McDermott
Locar is about to secure the contract for launching pipes for Rota 3 for McDermott, which will link Comperj to the pre-salt of the Santos Basin. Locar has invested around 140 million reais in a pipe launching barge. It has secured a contract with Sapura Energy Brazil for the works of the Sergipe Thermoelectric Plant under CELSE’s management; it will likely retain this contract as well.
