The Ministry of Education (MEC) officially announced the adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Teachers for 2024, announcing an increase of 3.62%. Established by the Minimum Wage Law, the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil is a strategy by the MEC to enhance the career in the education market. New Minimum Wage for Teachers Officially Announced by the MEC for 2024
The Ministry of Education (MEC) officially announced the adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Teachers for the year 2024, through Ordinance No. 61/2024, published in the Official Gazette on January 31, 2024.
The National Minimum Wage for Teachers, established by law, represents the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil.

Despite the law, several states and municipalities still face challenges in complying with this Minimum Wage, causing significant mobilization among unions across Brazil for a fairer payout to education market professionals.
Adjustment of the Teachers’ Minimum Wage Expected to Come into Effect in All States
The adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Public Education Teachers is calculated based on the difference in the Urban Elementary School Student Value (VAAF) from previous years.
For 2024, the amount was adjusted by 3.62%, a significant salary increase for teachers. Check the new adjusted values:
- VAAF FUNDEB 2022 = R$ 5.129,80
- VAAF FUNDEB 2023 = R$ 5.315,56
- Percentage Difference for Minimum Wage Update in 2024 = 3.62%
- Value of the Minimum Wage for Teaching in 2024 = R$ 4.580,57
It is important to emphasize that, according to current legislation, all states and municipalities must adjust the starting salaries of education professionals to the amounts stipulated by the National Minimum Wage.
However, this change in the market is expected to face obstacles in various locations across the country, as already anticipated by the MEC and teachers.
