The MEC Adjusted the Teachers’ Minimum Wage for 2024 by 3.62%, Following the Minimum Wage Law. The Goal is to Value the Career of Public Basic Education Professionals in Brazil. However, Many States and Municipalities Have Difficulty Complying with the Law, Generating Protests from Unions.

The Ministry of Education (MEC) officially announced the adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Teachers for 2024, announcing an increase of 3.62%. Established by the Minimum Wage Law, the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil is a strategy by the MEC to enhance the career in the education market. However, many states and municipalities are struggling to comply with this law, resulting in debates and mobilizations by teachers’ unions. Now, the adjustment aims to provide fairer remuneration to professionals in the sector.

New Minimum Wage for Teachers Officially Announced by the MEC for 2024

The Ministry of Education (MEC) officially announced the adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Teachers for the year 2024, through Ordinance No. 61/2024, published in the Official Gazette on January 31, 2024.

The National Minimum Wage for Teachers, established by law, represents the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil.

Established by the Minimum Wage Law (Law 11.738/2008), this amount is adjusted annually, as stipulated by the same law.

The main goal of the Minimum Wage is to value the career of teachers in the market, ensuring fair remuneration for these professionals.

Despite the law, several states and municipalities still face challenges in complying with this Minimum Wage, causing significant mobilization among unions across Brazil for a fairer payout to education market professionals.

Adjustment of the Teachers’ Minimum Wage Expected to Come into Effect in All States

The adjustment of the National Minimum Wage for Public Education Teachers is calculated based on the difference in the Urban Elementary School Student Value (VAAF) from previous years.

For 2024, the amount was adjusted by 3.62%, a significant salary increase for teachers. Check the new adjusted values:

  • VAAF FUNDEB 2022 = R$ 5.129,80
  • VAAF FUNDEB 2023 = R$ 5.315,56
  • Percentage Difference for Minimum Wage Update in 2024 = 3.62%
  • Value of the Minimum Wage for Teaching in 2024 = R$ 4.580,57

It is important to emphasize that, according to current legislation, all states and municipalities must adjust the starting salaries of education professionals to the amounts stipulated by the National Minimum Wage.

However, this change in the market is expected to face obstacles in various locations across the country, as already anticipated by the MEC and teachers.
