Free Online Course Promoted by MEC and Public Universities Promises to Train Critical Educators in Human Rights and Media Education. With Limited Slots, the Training Addresses Urgent Topics and Offers Exclusive Materials with Lifetime Access.

The Ministry of Education (MEC) has opened registrations for a free and fully online course on media education focused on the promotion and defense of human rights, aimed at teachers and professionals in basic education.

The training is scheduled to begin in June 2025 and will have 7,560 available slots.

The improvement course titled “Media Education for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights and Diversity” is the result of a collaboration between the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), the University of Brasília (UnB), MEC — through the Secretariat for Continuing Education, Youth and Adult Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion (Secadi) — and the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency (Secom).

The training seeks to empower educators as multiplier agents capable of promoting critical reflections on the impacts of media in school and social life.

Participants will be prepared to advocate for fundamental rights, with special attention to diversity and combating misinformation.

Free Training with Lifetime Access to Content

With a workload of 225 hours, the course will be offered entirely in the distance education (EaD) modality, from June 2, 2025, to January 31, 2026.

All participants will receive lifetime access to the educational content, even after completing the course.

In addition to the certificate of completion, registrants will also have access to teaching materials produced in different languages, distributed free of charge.

The proposal aims to broaden the reach of the content and encourage its use in diverse educational practice contexts.

The course was conceived within the second edition of the Human Rights and Diversity Education Program, conducted by UFU and funded with resources from Secadi/MEC.

In the first edition, over 5,400 participants were certified across all regions of Brazil.

Contemporary Topics and Critical Deepening

The course content stands out for its in-depth look at sensitive and current topics, such as the ethical use of information, the role of media in society, and the impacts of digital exposure.

Issues such as aporophobia (aversion to poor people), structural racism, climate change, child and adolescent protection, as well as the visibility and safety of educators on social media will also be addressed.

According to the organizers, the course seeks to foster the critical sense of education professionals in light of the increasing volume of information circulating on networks and in the digital environment.

With this, it is expected to strengthen the pedagogical autonomy of educators, equipping them with theoretical and practical tools to deal with the challenges of the digital age.

Target Audience and Slot Distribution

Out of the total of 7,560 available slots, 5,400 are prioritized for teachers currently working in public or private basic education.

The other 2,160 slots are aimed at other education professionals who work directly or indirectly with pedagogical practices or educational projects.

Eligible to apply are active teachers, school managers, pedagogues, educational technicians, and professionals from related areas, provided they meet the prerequisites established by the course organizers.

Among the requirements is the need for the candidate to have completed a degree.

However, those who have not yet completed their degree may also participate, provided they can prove professional links with educational institutions or organizations working with education.

Additionally, access to the internet and compatible electronic devices is necessary to attend classes, complete activities, and interact in forums.

Another requirement is the availability of at least eight hours a week to dedicate to the course, in order to ensure a good understanding of the proposed activities.

How to Register for the Free MEC Course

Registrations are open until May 12, 2025, via a digital form.

The selection of participants will be based on the analysis of the information provided at the time of registration and compliance with the established criteria.

Slot confirmation will occur in two stages: after the registration period ends, a notification will be sent via email to the classified candidates, within the limit of available slots.

This email will contain instructions for confirming interest and sending the necessary documentation for enrollment.

The email address provided at the time of registration will be the official communication channel, so it is important that the data is filled in correctly.

The organizers inform that the response to the notification email is mandatory and must be done within the stipulated timeframe.

If not, the candidate may lose their slot.

Questions can be directly clarified with the course organizers via email: secretariacdhd@proex.ufu.br.

Media Education and Human Rights: An Urgent Need

In times of growing misinformation and attacks on fundamental rights, initiatives like this reinforce the social role of schools and educators as agents of transformation.

Media education is not limited to the use of technology in the classroom but also encompasses the development of a critical stance towards the avalanche of content that impacts public opinion.

The proposal for the training offered by MEC in partnership with public universities meets an urgent demand: to prepare educators to mediate, with awareness and responsibility, the relationships between media, democracy, and citizenship.

The expectation is that the course contributes to the formation of a national network of educators committed to social justice, respect for differences, and the appreciation of human rights.

For those working in basic education — whether in the classroom or managing pedagogical projects — this is an opportunity for professional updating with free content, recognized certification, and a focus on indispensable themes for the school reality.
