The FAB's new supersonic fighter arrived in Brazil this week. Measuring 14 meters long and capable of reaching speeds of up to 2.400 km/h, it is equipped with advanced technologies.
Last Friday (15), the Brazilian air force (FAB) received at the Anápolis air base, in Goiás, the F-39 Gripen supersonic fighter. This aircraft, already tested and declared fit for flight, is the seventh of its type to join the FAB fleet. The F-39 Gripen arrived in Brazil at the beginning of the week, after a journey of approximately 20 days by ship from Sweden. In the early hours of Wednesday (13), the aircraft was transported from Porto to Navegantes International Airport, in Santa Catarina, where it underwent technical procedures before being delivered to the FAB.

Work at the airport included the installation of the ejection seat and survival kit, supply and system checks. On Thursday (14/12), the engine test was carried out, which included a rotation in the apron and a taxi on the airport runway.
The FAB's newest supersonic fighter took off at 10:35 am. The flight between Navegantes and Anápolis lasted 1h20 and was conducted by a pilot from the Institute for Research and Flight Testing (IPEV). The fighter now joins the other aircraft in the First Air Defense Group (1st GDA) – Jaguar Squadron, based in BAAN.

Operation Navegantes comprised the disembarkation, displacement and takeoff of the F-39 Gripen with registration number FAB 4107. The mission was attended by teams from the Combat Aircraft Program Coordinating Committee (COPAC), the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE), the Aeronautics Logistics Transport Center (CTLA), the Preparation Command (COMPREP), the Aeronautics Intelligence Center (CIAER), Saab and the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA).
FAB takes another step towards consolidating the Brazil-Sweden partnership
The operation at the airport also had the support of the Santa Catarina Military Police (PMSC), the Navegantes Municipal Guard, the Santa Catarina Fire Department (CBMSC), the Santa Catarina Civil Police (PCSC), the Municipal City Hall of Navegantes, the Municipal Surveillance and Traffic Foundation (NAVETRAN) and the Federal Revenue Service.
According to the coordinator of Operation Navegantes, Colonel Aviator Leandro Barbosa Ferreira Pinto, from COPAC, receiving the seventh supersonic fighter jet represents another step in strengthening the Brazil-Sweden partnership.
According to Barbosa, the new FAB fighter stands out as a driver of the Brazilian Air Force's operational capacity in maintaining the sovereignty of our airspace. Recognized for its efficiency, low operating cost, high availability and advanced technological capacity, the F-39 Gripen represents a qualitative leap for the FAB. The aircraft features cutting-edge technologies, including the most modern systems, weapons, and sensors to carry out activities in hostile environments and complex combat scenarios.
Get to know FAB’s supersonic fighter better
The new FAB F-39 Gripen fighter is the first line vector of the Brazilian Air Force, as the aircraft can perform air defense, ground attack and reconnaissance missions.
The fighter operates with various types of weapons, both with air-to-air capability, like air-to-ground, being capable of flying at twice the speed of sound at a maximum altitude of 16 meters.
Furthermore, among the aircraft's characteristics is the ability to take off and land on short runways, which makes it possible to operate with little infrastructure or even on highways, if necessary. The reduced refueling time, to rearm and complete technical inspection, promises even more agility, precision and efficiency to the air defense missions carried out by the FAB. Measuring over 14 meters, the F-39 exceeds 2,4 km/h and is used by air forces around the world.
