Bahia Is Advancing in the Green Hydrogen Market With More Than 10 Signatures on Memorandums of Understanding. The Estimate Is to Generate Thousands of Jobs for Residents of the Region and Accelerate the Energy Transition.
On this Wednesday (14), Memorandums of Understanding between Rectors and representatives of 10 Science and Technology Institutions (ICTs) were signed. Among those present at the event were André Joazeiro, state secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (Secti) and Roberto Fortuna, executive secretary of the Special Committee for the State Plan for the Green Hydrogen Economy. The institutions aim to support the development of technological innovations, improvement of industrial processes, training of new researchers within universities and companies, generating thousands of jobs. The signatures took place in the auditorium of the Bahia Research Support Foundation (FAPESB).
Memorandums Will Strengthen the Green Hydrogen Economy
André Joazeiro, secretary of Secti, emphasizes that this energy investment in Bahia is essential for the state’s economic growth in the coming years. Green Hydrogen Is the Fuel of the Future and it will be no different for Bahia and the state’s industry.
The development of this low-cost technology aims to revitalize the industry, generating jobs, and promoting an energy transformation in the industrial park, in addition to boosting, in terms of revenue and production, sales abroad. It is currently the most strategic project for the industry and development of Bahia.

State Plan for Green Hydrogen Economy
For the coordinator of Research of the UFBA Research and Graduate Studies Pro-Rectory, Olívia Oliveira, the protocol unites the institutions. According to the pro-rector of Graduate Studies and Research at Senai/Cimatec, signing this agreement, alongside the Government of Bahia, places all universities on an equal footing to take steps toward the future.
In the era of decarbonization, this fuel is the issue of the future and there are various challenges to reach it, but the state has all the pieces to be one of the pioneers in the country, given the challenges of the past.
The government of Bahia launched the State Plan for the Green Hydrogen Economy (H2V), established by Decree No. 21.200 of March 2, 2022. The Special Committee is made up of representatives from the Secretariats of Economic Development, which presides and exercises the function of Secti, Executive Secretariat of Infrastructure (Seinfra), Environment (Sema), and Inema.
The Committee is based on four Subcommittees, the Market Development Subcommittee, led by SDE, the Environment and Sustainability Subcommittee, led by Sema, Technology and Innovation, led by Secti, and Infrastructure, led by Seinfra.
State Will Receive Million-Dollar Investments
The Camaçari Pole, in the state of Bahia, has a project in development by Unigel to install a green hydrogen unit, projected to start activities as early as next year, generating thousands of jobs.
The estimated investment in the venture is around US$ 120 million, with the aim of generating a production capacity of 10 tons annually. According to Paulo Guimarães, superintendent of the Bahia Secretariat of Economic Development, the focus is to meet the internal market demand and, at the same time, the external market demand, if any.
