Raízen Is Warned by ANP for Inconsistent Data from 59 Records; in 2020 the Plant Had Already Been Held Responsible for the Same Problem
Raízen, a giant in the ethanol production sector, received a warning from the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) that shook the fuel market. The reason? Inconsistent data regarding its production capacity. This recent news raises important questions about the quality of ethanol production in Brazil and the challenges faced by plants.
Ethanol Production Is One of the Pillars of the Fuel Industry in Brazil
Ethanol production is one of the pillars of the fuel industry in Brazil. Raízen, as one of the leading companies in the sector, faces the complex task of balancing efficiency, sustainability, and quality at its plants. However, the recent warnings from ANP highlight the difficulties involved in the production of this biofuel.
ANP deemed the data from 59 of Raízen’s records as “inconsistent” or “untrue,” pointing to significant failures in ethanol production at the company’s units in São Paulo and Goiás. These records were made from February to May of this year, raising concerns about the accuracy of the data reported by one of the largest ethanol producers in the country.

On September 1st, ANP sent a document informing that Raízen risks having its ethanol producer registration suspended due to recurrence, as the company had already been held responsible for the same problem in 2020. According to the company’s inspector, “the reported yields remained inconsistent and there were no clear justifications.”
Raízen Emphasizes That the Error Did Not Affect the Agency’s Oversight or Harm Its Customers and Fuel Supply
To understand the magnitude of the problem, it is important to analyze the amount of raw material needed for ethanol production. Raízen claims to have produced more than 439 million liters of ethanol during the period in question, using 808.8 thousand tons of processed raw material, including sugarcane, molasses, bagasse, and straw. However, industry data indicates that, on average, about 12 kg of sugarcane is needed to produce one liter of anhydrous ethanol.
This disparity between the numbers presented by Raízen and the industry’s estimates draws the attention of ANP, which claims that the yields of ethanol production remain inconsistent and have not been properly justified by the company.
Raízen, in response to ANP’s warning, claims that there was only “a formal error in submitting information to ANP that was promptly corrected.” The company emphasizes that this error was isolated and did not affect the agency’s oversight or harm its customers and fuel supply.
ANP Closely Monitors Plants and Guarantees Consumers Access to Reliable and High-Quality Fuel
ANP’s warning to Raízen serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in ethanol production in Brazil. The pressure to increase efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and maintain product quality is constant. Companies like Raízen play a crucial role in the Brazilian economy but also face rigorous scrutiny from regulatory authorities.
As the biofuels industry continues to evolve, it is expected that companies in the sector will be committed to providing accurate and transparent data. The lesson learned from ANP’s warning is clear: quality and accuracy are fundamental in ethanol production, and any deviation from these standards can have significant consequences.
The future of Raízen and other companies in the sector depends on their ability to face these challenges and maintain a constant commitment to excellence in ethanol production. Meanwhile, the ANP will continue to closely monitor the industry, ensuring that consumers have access to reliable and high-quality fuel.
