Noxis Energy Finalized Technology Negotiations to Start Methanol Production
Noxis Energy is responsible for the Pecém Oil Refinery Project (RPP), located in the state of Ceará, and is making significant progress. After all, it has reached an agreement with the BlueNano group to start methanol production. In this regard, the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex will have a new industrial plant. Thus, new investments will arise.
The Pecém Oil Refinery project is ambitious and constitutes the first private initiative in Ceará within this category. In this sense, the oil comes from PetroChina, and the plant is assisted by Chemex Global from the United States. Methanol will be produced from natural gas. Keep reading to learn more.

Pecém Oil Refinery Project Will Have Million-Dollar Investment and Capacity of 500 Thousand Tons Per Year
The maritime transport sector has high demand in the northeastern region for methanol, a type of gas widely used as fuel. In this context, Noxis Energy, which is working on the Pecém Oil Refinery project, has decided to seek to expand production in the region. Thus, the costs associated with gas imports will be lower.

Ocyan opens registrations for startups focused on innovation in the oil and gas sector and will select projects for Innovation Day with the support of Nexio.
Therefore, the company closed the agreement with BlueNano to incorporate methane production technology at the complex. Thus, an investment of US$ 450 million will be necessary to implement the industrial plant focused on methanol. However, it is estimated that annual production will exceed 500 thousand tons.
Noxis Has Plans to Stimulate Methanol Production from Green Sources, Avoiding Oil
Noxis Energy’s goal is to reduce fossil fuel sources used in methanol production in the Northeast region. To this end, reducing natural gas usage is one of the main focuses. Thus, BlueNano Group and Noxis are exploring the possibility of using carbon dioxide from landfills in combination with green hydrogen to produce methanol.
In line with this thinking, the International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that by the end of the 21st century, maritime transport will need 50 million tons of green hydrogen. After all, it will be used to produce methanol, which is widely used in the sector.
It is worth noting that the maritime sector accounts for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, 90% of global trade volume comes from maritime transport. Thus, green alternatives can reduce the use of oil and its derivatives.
The Pecém Oil Refinery and Its Developments
The Pecém Oil Refinery project had an initial investment of US$ 1.3 billion for the construction of the complex. The plant is expected to occupy an area of 106 hectares, called the Processing Zone for Export, in Ceará.
This Refinery complex includes the participation of internationally renowned professionals, such as Israeli geologist Eitan Aizenberg. Additionally, the procedures for environmental licensing and construction approval are already underway.
Thus, Noxis estimates that construction will begin in 2023, generating thousands of jobs for the industrial plant. However, operations are expected to start in 2026.
It is noteworthy that this industrial plant is the first private refinery in Ceará and will produce around 100 thousand barrels per day. Moreover, the focus will be on the type of fuel used in the maritime sector, known as bunker.
