Specialists Warn That the Suspension of Contributions Can Generate Loss of Insured Quality and Leave Families Without Protection.

The death pension and sickness benefit are two of the most important benefits guaranteed by the INSS. However, thousands of Brazilians are at risk of losing these rights by suspending their contribution payments. The warning comes from social security lawyer Taís Santos, who has been advising insured individuals in similar situations for over 20 years.

According to the specialist, failing to contribute for consecutive months can lead to loss of the so-called “insured quality,” an essential requirement to access benefits in cases of illness, disability, or death.

Without this condition, all previous contributions may become ineffective, directly impacting workers and their families.

Why You Should Never Stop Contributing

The first immediate consequence of stopping INSS payments is loss of insured quality.

According to social security legislation, there is a grace period during which coverage remains valid, but it is limited. After this period, the worker is no longer protected.

Lawyer Taís Santos explains that many people believe that, since they have contributed for years, they can suspend payments without significant impacts.

However, if an illness or accident occurs during the suspension, the insured will be left unprotected, with no rights to sickness benefits or retirement due to permanent disability.

Reduction in the Value of Retirement

Another little-discussed risk is the reduction in the value of future retirement. Contributions to the INSS not only serve to maintain the active link but also influence the calculation of the average salary used to define the benefit.

According to Taís Santos, those who stop paying may see their retirement value significantly reduced, as the time of contribution and the calculation base directly impact the final benefit.

Therefore, even those who have reached the minimum age should carefully assess whether it is worth stopping payments.

Benefits That Can Be Lost

Contributing to the INSS does not only guarantee retirement. It is also the gateway to essential benefits such as sickness benefit, death pension, and retirement due to permanent disability.

Without regular contributions, all these rights are compromised.

In practice, if the insured dies after losing insured quality, the dependents will not be entitled to the death pension.

Similarly, in case of illness, it will not be possible to access sickness benefits, even if there are years of previous contributions. The INSS does not recognize benefits when protection has already been suspended.

Real Case: The Warning from Dona Maria

The social security lawyer recounts the case of Dona Maria, a client who illustrates the severe consequences of suspension.

Her husband had stopped contributing and, even after being advised to immediately resume payments, there was a delay.

He resumed contributions, but died after just four months, without completing the minimum required to regain insured quality.

The result was devastating: Dona Maria was not entitled to the death pension, despite being married for decades.

According to Taís Santos, had the minimum deadline been met, the family would today have a lifelong income, essential for household expenses.

Pension Planning Is Essential

Given so many risks, specialists recommend that the insured never suspend contributions without first consulting a professional.

In some cases, it is possible to adjust the frequency or reduce amounts without losing coverage, but the decision should always be supported by a technical analysis.

The lawyer emphasizes that pension planning is the safest way to guarantee future benefits without running the risk of irreversible losses.

It allows for the identification of the necessary contribution time, alternative collection options, and strategies to keep coverage active.

The death pension and sickness benefit are fundamental rights that can be lost if the worker suspends payments to the INSS.

The loss of insured quality turns years of contributions into a financial and social risk.

And you, do you know anyone who stopped paying the INSS and faced difficulties obtaining benefits? Do you think most workers understand these risks?
