The Expansion Projects Of The Existing Pharmaceutical Chemical Poles In The Largest Port Complex In The Northeast Are Valued At R$ 4 Billion, Could Generate More Than 1,650 New Jobs

The Suape industrial port complex, located in the city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in the metropolitan region of Recife (PE), was once a major reference for job creation in Brazil before the collapse of the naval sector due to corruption scandals revealed by Operation Car Wash. However, the enterprise is still a powerhouse for the regional and economic development of the country, due to its location and strategic importance. For this reason, there is great expectation for the return of the “job boom” due to the billion-dollar investments that are coming, such as the expansion of the existing pharmaceutical poles in the area.

Last year, Blau Pharmaceutical established operations in Suape. Now, the giant in the pharmaceutical and high-complexity hospital supplies sector intends to invest R$ 1.5 billion, which should generate more than 1,400 jobs, on a 600,000 m² plot to operate 36 production lines.

Another pharmaceutical pole in Suape is Aché Laboratories. The brand has been operating in the area since 2019 and now intends to produce 700 million units of medication per year at the port. The project for this second phase is expected to occupy an area of 250,000 square meters and totals approximately R$ 500 million in investments, expected to generate more than 250 jobs.

Combined, All Planned Ventures Will Employ Over 60,000 People In Suape In The Coming Years

Currently, 224 companies are established in the Suape industrial complex. These enterprises have generated at least 40,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to a survey conducted by Movimento Econômico. All these businesses will join at least 12 other strategic billion-dollar projects – including the expansion of the pharmaceutical poles – which together exceed R$ 46 billion and the projection of more than 25,000 new jobs. Thus, it is possible that Suape may have over 60,000 workers by 2027.

Recently, Suape’s autonomy was restored, allowing it to manage its business, further speeding up new ventures. An important achievement that is celebrated alongside announcements of several projects, such as a new maritime terminal from A.P. Moller – Maersk, which is expected to invest more than R$ 2.5 billion.

A production plant for green hydrogen from Qair is also planned with incredible investments projected at over R$ 22.5 billion and an expected nearly 3,000 jobs. Additionally, a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage terminal from Nacional Gás with Liquigás and Copagaz is anticipated, budgeted at R$ 3.5 billion, and a regasification terminal for LNG from Oncorp and Shell (R$ 2 billion).

The Abreu e Lima refinery, which has operated in the Suape port complex since 2014, is expected to gain a new lease of life with over R$ 5 billion in investments for it to be sold by Petrobras one day. This is the project that will generate the most jobs in the area by 2027, with projections of 12,000 job openings. Check here for detailed projections of each project.

Expectations For The Transnordestina Branch That Would Connect Suape

The Transnordestina Railway, whose current project is to connect the city of Elizeu Martins in Piauí to the Port of Pecém in São Gonçalo do Amarante (CE), should include the Port of Suape, with the construction of a branch starting in the middle of the railway, in the city of Salgueiro, in the hinterland of Pernambuco. Thus, there would be 1,200 kilometers of tracks from Piauí to Ceará and an additional 700 kilometers from Salgueiro to Suape.

However, the concessionaire responsible for the work, with the approval of the Bolsonaro government, decided not to carry out the Salgueiro-Suape stretch anymore, which caused enormous dissatisfaction. The impasse made headlines in the local political news.

Political leaders have been negotiating with agents of the current Federal Government for the project to return to its original scope, including the Port of Suape. There is still no definitive solution to the situation.
