Minas Gerais Full Steam Ahead, Considered the Locomotive of Brazil, State Leads Ranking Being Responsible for 18.5% of the Country’s Solar Energy Generation
Although Brazil took time to engage in the solar energy segment, the pace developed in the last five years demonstrates a continuous and increasingly accelerated growth. The northern region of Minas Gerais, which concentrates the majority of Brazil’s distributed generation plants, will receive an investment of R$ 400 million in the coming years, further boosting the state as a reference in the segment. Another good news is that Minas will receive a million-dollar investment from Hipolabor and will have the largest generic medication factory.

The number of solar plant connections in Brazil has more than doubled in the last twelve months, jumping from 176,885 in January 2020 to 390,910 last month, according to data compiled by the Brazilian Agency for Distributed Generation (ABGD).
Repositioning Brazil from the 26th place in the world ranking in 2017 to the 16th in 2020. Despite the huge leap, the use of solar energy represents less than 5% of the entire energy matrix of the country, still having a large space to be conquered.

Minas Gerais Leads Ranking of Solar Energy Generation in Brazil
Currently, with a total installed capacity of 862.9 MW, Minas Gerais occupies the top position in the ranking released by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), being responsible for 18.5% of the solar energy generation in all of Brazil. The state’s figures are higher than the sum of the federations of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which occupy the second and eighth positions, respectively.
Thus, Minas is consolidating itself as a national hub for solar energy production, relieving the overloaded traditional electric system and contributing to the sustainable clean development of the state.
A significant portion of the total number of solar plants in Brazil is concentrated in the northern region of Minas Gerais. According to the financial director of the Minas Gerais Company for Distributed Generation (EMGD), José Francisco Dutra, it is important to highlight, among other factors, that the state has one of the highest electrical energy tariffs in Brazil, which makes the use of solar sources even more advantageous, in addition to presenting excellent solar metrics. “This indicator points to the amount of sunlight incident in a given space and, consequently, determines the maximum generation potential of energy in that area,” he explains. “These factors make Minas a true powerhouse in capturing and consuming solar energy,” reinforces the businessman.
