Delegation Overflew Açu and Learned About the Works of the Largest Thermoelectric Plant in Latin America, Under Development in São João da Barra (RJ)
The Port of Açu hosted a distinguished visit from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, last Friday, the 2nd, in São João da Barra (RJ). On that occasion, he visited the construction sites of UTE GNA I and the LNG Regasification Terminal, which GNA – Gás Natural Açu is building on-site. The projects are part of the largest natural gas thermoelectric complex in Latin America, with 3 GW of installed capacity. The visit itinerary also included an overflight of the Port of Açu, which offers a logistics and services hub for the O&G sector.

“We are developing a complete oil and gas hub at the Port of Açu, synergistic, with connectivity to the existing pipeline network in the Southeast, which will be extremely strategic for Brazil’s oil and gas industry. We are talking not only about the construction of a large thermoelectric park but also about the operation of the only private terminal in Brazil for oil transshipment, which will soon offer storage and blending services. Furthermore, leading companies that supply goods and services for the oil and gas industry already operate from Açu. Thanks to our strategic location, we are a real alternative for facilitating the movement of oil and utilizing pre-salt gas”, stated Tadeu Fraga, CEO of Prumo Logística, the economic group responsible for developing the Port of Açu.

During the overflight, the Minister was able to see the entire infrastructure of the complex, which has the largest offshore support base in the world; terminals for the movement of bulk solids, general cargo, and project cargo; as well as factories for the construction of subsea equipment and maritime fuel supply services.
The field visit began with the UTE GNA I construction site, a natural gas thermoelectric plant in combined cycle with an installed capacity of 1.3 GW. With more than 75% of the construction progressed and all large equipment supplied by Siemens already delivered on-site, the plant is expected to start commercial operation in January 2021.
The authorities also visited the construction of the LNG regasification terminal, which will be Brazil’s first privately operated terminal, where the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit, the FSRU BW Magna, will be permanently positioned and is expected to arrive in Brazil in 2020. Also in 2020, the construction of UTE GNA II, a natural gas thermoelectric plant in combined cycle with an installed capacity of 1.7 GW, is planned to begin.
“The Minister’s visit to our works was a great opportunity to present our structuring project, which will contribute to the diversification of the Brazilian energy matrix”, said Bernardo Perseke, CEO of GNA. He added that the plants under construction at the venture will function as an anchor project to attract domestic gas to the Port of Açu.
“GNA’s venture, which will generate the largest thermoelectric park in Latin America, is fully aligned with the current government’s public policy on the new gas market. It is a pleasure and an honor as a Brazilian and minister to visit this LNG terminal, which is being developed here within the Açu complex and is fundamental for the future of our country. I leave here with a sparkle in my eyes”, stated the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque.
Currently, of the 7,000 workers at the Port of Açu, more than 4,700 work at GNA’s ventures, with many being local residents. By the end of July, GNA had completed over 5 million hours without work-related accidents that required time off.
The delegation included the Secretary of Oil, Gas and Biofuels, Marcio Felix, the Secretary of Geology, Mining and Mineral Transformation, Alexandre Vidigal, as well as the Director-General of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), Décio Oddone, and three other directors, Aurélio Amaral, José Cesário Cecchi, and Felipe Kury. In addition to the CEOs of Prumo and GNA, the authorities were welcomed by the President of the Exploration and Production segment of BP in Brazil, Adriano Bastos, and the President and CEO of Siemens in Brazil, André Clark, along with other representatives from the companies.
