Known for its constant innovations that ensure sustainable practices, the company reformulates the composition of its 20-liter barrels using post-consumer recycled resin from Braskem

Moove, a global company for lubricants and base oils responsible for manufacturing and marketing Mobil™ lubricants, is constantly evolving by developing processes and initiatives that prioritize ESG premises and commitments. In line with its purpose of “Moving people and businesses the right way for everyone,” the company considers environmental aspects in all stages of its production processes and now presents a new technology for its 20-liter barrel, which is now produced with post-consumer recycled resin from Braskem. This initiative contributes to the reduction of plastics in the environment and ensures the integrity and quality of the product and packaging.

The post-consumer recycled resin, known as PCR (post-consumer recycled), is produced from appropriately discarded plastic waste that is sent for recycling. A pioneer in using this raw material in lubricant packaging, Moove has teamed up with Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, and Raízes, a national bottle manufacturer, to generate positive impacts in economic and sustainable aspects through this innovation. “The 20-liter barrel is produced with 40% PCR resin. The use of this plastic resulted in a 6% reduction in Moove’s total consumption of virgin plastic,” explains Marilia Goldschimidt, marketing manager for the Mobil™ brand.

The use of post-consumer recycled resins significantly contributes to the reduction of waste in the environment. Starting the use of PCR in the second quarter of 2022, it is estimated that by the end of this year, approximately 500 tons of recycled plastic will be achieved. The plastic used in this technology comes directly from the Jogue Limpo Institute – an association of companies that manufacture or import lubricating oil and carries out the reverse logistics of used plastic packaging – thus closing the cycle of this product.

At Braskem, the project is also recognized as a significant action for the company, which, like Moove, is dedicated daily to building a more sustainable future. “This project reinforces Braskem’s commitment to sustainable development, as well as demonstrating the quality and diversity of applications of our PCR. We take pride in promoting partnerships with companies from numerous segments, uniting various links in the production chain and closing the loop of the circular economy,” says Américo Bartilotti, director of the packaging and consumer goods business at Braskem.

To bring the new 20-liter barrels to market, Moove relied on the expertise of Raízes, responsible for transforming Braskem’s PCR resin into the first barrel with recycled material in the national market, through the use of multilayer technology, which interleaves independent layers of virgin material and PCR in the same product. To ensure total customer satisfaction, tests for filling, stacking, storage, and long-distance shipping were conducted, all rigorously approved and successfully passed by Moove’s quality department with the support of Raízes.

Moove continues to test new barrels and bottles, taking another step in its commitment to keep sustainable practices active in all its processes. As early as 2005, the company was a pioneer in launching the “Intelligent Exchange.” The use of bulk lubricants provides many advantages ranging from cost savings to environmental protection. Since the launch, millions of plastic packaging have been kept from disposal. Furthermore, the main products of the Mobil™ brand, such as the Mobil Delvac™ product line, a favorite among truck drivers, are now investing in this recycled packaging technology.
