Residents Form a Small Community High on a Remote Mountain in Taining, with Spring Water, a Restored Temple, a Community Cafeteria, and Meditation Caves Open to the Horizon.

Residents living high on a remote mountain, walking daily on a walkway fixed to the cliff, have transformed a rock crevice into a refuge of silence, spring water, and natural caves. Residents and visitors traverse a narrow path suspended above the void, surrounded by vertical slopes and a landscape reminiscent of a sanctuary sculpted by the mountain itself.

Located in Taining, in the city of Sanming, Fujian province, the community is about a 50-minute drive from the urban area and requires a climb of approximately 30 minutes from the base of the mountain, on a route considered not too steep. According to reports, the place has existed for over a thousand years and was discovered from a long crevice in the rock, gradually transformed into a walkway and houses that served as refuge in times of war and conflict.

Residents on a Walkway Suspended in the Void

The entrance to the community begins on a path described as a true “insane path on the cliff.” The walkway follows the slope, always with the abyss in view, until reaching the houses built at the end of the route.

Residents point to traces of human presence scattered along the way, reinforcing the idea that the place has been occupied and adapted over many years.

Among the buildings, a stone house embedded in the mountain wall stands out, blending with a natural cave.

The smooth, rounded ceiling reveals the human work that perfected what the rock offered, creating a solid and discreet dwelling amidst the rock face. For those arriving for the first time, the feeling is one of astonishment at the inevitable question: how did someone manage to build a house there.

Residents, Community Temple, and Shared Cafeteria

High on the mountain, residents organize their lives around common areas and religious spaces. A small temple, attributed to collective constructions by local residents, has been renovated and restored, preserving its character as a spiritual refuge.

The set resembles a minimal village suspended, where the temple, houses, and walkways form a single organism glued to the rock.

Drinking water comes from a spring that flows down from the mountain and has been channeled to a small lake, a solution that ensures supply in a completely isolated environment.

Next to it, the community cafeteria operates. Four people live there permanently, including two monks and two families, who share meals and routines in this living space.

There is also a small square that, according to the residents, underwent recent renovations, improving comfort and circulation in a place where there are no streets in the traditional sense.

Residents, Absolute Silence, and a Life of Tea, Calligraphy, and Contemplation

Part of the structure high on the cliff is occupied by private residences. In one of them, the visitor is received by the owner, who allows filming and showcases his leisure room, dedicated to calligraphy, painting, and tea culture.

The spacious room remains as a reserved area, reinforcing the discretion typical of those living far from the curiosity of the outside world.

The report highlights that living there is compared to residing in a silent, isolated, and serene paradise, a place where the mountain acts as a physical and symbolic barrier against urban noise.

Conversations are limited by the local dialect, and many words are not fully understood by visitors, further reinforcing the sense of cultural and geographical distance from cities.

For the residents, daily life includes moments of leisure, tea preparation, writing, handicrafts, and a constant coexistence with the sound of the wind and the emptiness of the cliff.

Meditation Caves and Handicrafts in the Rock

Behind the main areas is a space described as a leisure and work area, where residents sometimes produce handicrafts.

A stone house serves to store tools, and large objects, of an immediately unidentifiable function, draw attention for their rustic appearance and integration with the rocky scenery.

At another point, the visitor is led to what is called the meditation cave. Natural formations create various unusual caves, used for silent contemplation and meditative practices focused on the distant landscape.

Gazing at the horizon from there is presented as a deeply relaxing experience, where residents and monks find calm amid the stone walls and the emptiness that opens in front of them. The environment reinforces the character of a natural sanctuary of the place.

Aerial View Reveals the Scale of Isolation of the Residents

To complete the experience, drone images show from above the extent of the complex: the walkway glued to the slope, the houses fitted into the rock, the temple, the square, and the communal areas, all tiny compared to the valley and mountains surrounding the community.

Only from the aerial view can one clearly perceive the degree of isolation in which these residents live, suspended between the rock and the sky.
