Contran Approves Law with Fines for Thousands of Drivers Across the Country

The Contran (National Traffic Council) has approved a law that has left many drivers in shock. The change, which was made almost by “stroke of the pen,” affects all drivers of four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles, requiring a series of precautions regarding the vehicles’ lighting system. Those who do not comply with this law may end up paying dearly, literally.

What Changes with the Law?

Among the main changes brought by this law from Contran, is the mandatory use of low beam headlights during the day in certain types of vehicles. This particularly applies to motorcycles, buses, and mopeds. Contran also recommends that other drivers follow this practice, as it has been proven that low beam headlights help increase safety on the roads. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a fine of R$ 130.16 and four points on the license.

Another important point is about the use of low beam headlights in rain, fog, or haze, both inside and outside urban areas. For more modern vehicles equipped with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), Contran allows this light to be used on highways during the day, but emphasizes that it cannot be used at night, under penalty of a fine.

Technical Details and New Penalties

This law also covers technical details of the vehicles’ lighting systems. For example, Resolution 993/2023 from Contran highlights the importance of keeping the headlights adjusted. Misaligned headlights that shine directly into the rearview mirror of the car ahead can cause serious accidents. The penalty for anyone caught in this condition is a serious infraction, which generates five points on the license and a fine of R$ 195.23.

HAPPENING NOW: New traffic law may radically change vehicle identification, impacting owners of Fiat, Volkswagen, Renault, and other models

Another situation that may generate a fine is the improper use of high beam headlights. Contran is clear: high beam headlights should only be used on unlit roads and must be turned off immediately upon detecting another vehicle ahead. Ignoring this rule could result in a minor infraction, with three points on the license and a fine of R$ 88.38.

The turn signals, which many drivers forget to use (it happens a lot) or that are burnt out, are also under scrutiny from this law. Failing to indicate a change of direction or lane, or driving with burnt-out bulbs, may result in two separate fines, which together can amount to R$ 325.39 and nine points on the license.

The Importance of Maintenance

Keeping the vehicle’s lighting system up to date has never been so crucial. The Contran law puts extra pressure on drivers to conduct regular inspections. Brake lights, taillights, headlights, and turn signals need to be frequently checked, and burnt-out bulbs should be replaced immediately. The fine for driving with a burnt-out bulb can be avoided with a simple investment, which is much cheaper than the penalties imposed.

This law from Contran serves as a reminder that road safety begins with attention to detail. So, extra attention next time you head out with your car or motorcycle, because this law does not forgive those who mess up!

For drivers, this law approved by Contran is not just another rule to follow – it’s a warning to double down on attention on the roads and avoid fines that can weigh heavily on the wallet. And you, what do you think of this change? Have you ever found yourself forgetting to turn on the low beam or noticed that the turn signals weren’t working? Share your experience!
