Fiat, Volkswagen, and More Owners Without Ground: New Traffic Law Announced to END These License Plates
The owners of popular car brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, and Renault were taken by surprise by a new traffic law that promises to change license plates again. The bill, which has already passed through the Commission of Constitution, Justice and Citizenship (CCJ) of the Federal Senate, may require drivers to revert the recent change to the Mercosur standard, bringing back the information about the city and state of vehicle registration.
On June 16, 2024, the Commission of Constitution, Justice and Citizenship (CCJ) of the Federal Senate approved Bill No. 3.214/2023, authored by Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC). The proposal, which is still pending a vote in the Chamber of Deputies, aims to reintroduce the information of state and city on license plates in Brazil, a change that directly affects owners of vehicles from brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Renault, and others.
New Traffic Law Promises to Affect Brazilians’ Pockets Once Again
In 2020, Brazil adopted the Mercosur license plate model, which eliminated this information, replacing it with a national flag. The change was seen as a necessary standardization to facilitate the circulation of vehicles among Mercosur member countries, but ended up creating challenges for traffic authorities within Brazil.

According to Senator Esperidião Amin, the return of state and city information on license plates is crucial for improving the efficiency of the work of road police and other regulatory agents. “Road police, traffic agents, and other regulatory bodies rely on this information to perform their work efficiently and accurately,” highlighted the senator.

Many Owners of Cars from Brands Like Fiat and Volkswagen Were Concerned
The reaction among drivers was immediate. Many owners of cars from brands like Fiat and Volkswagen were worried about the costs and bureaucracy that may come with the potential requirement to change license plates again. However, it is important to note that, for now, the proposal still needs to be approved in the Chamber of Deputies and sanctioned by the president before it becomes law.
Owners of Old Vehicles Will Not Need to Replace Their License Plates Immediately
If approved, the new traffic law stipulates that the change will be mandatory for all vehicles registered one year after the publication of the law. This means that owners of old vehicles will not need to replace their license plates immediately, except in cases of ownership transfer or change of state or city.
Currently, When Must the Change Be Made?
Since the Mercosur license plate became mandatory in 2020, many drivers have been confused about when and how the change should be made. Currently, changing license plates is only mandatory in specific situations, such as ownership transfer or moving to a new city, but the new traffic law may broaden this requirement.
As the proposal is still going through legal proceedings, owners of Fiat, Volkswagen, Renault, and other car models should stay alert for upcoming legislative decisions. The new traffic law promises to impact the lives of many drivers, bringing back a discussion that seemed settled with the implementation of the Mercosur license plate.
And you, what do you think of this new traffic law? Are you in favor of restoring the information of state and city on license plates or do you prefer to maintain the Mercosur standard? Leave your comment and share your opinion! After all, this change could impact all of us who use the car daily.
