Gerdau Announces Exit from European and Asian Countries, Maintaining Only Investments in American Factories
With its factories valued at over R$ 60 billion, Gerdau wishes for about 20% of its revenue to come from businesses other than steel production, but for that, the company has been innovating. According to executive Gustavo Weneck, 47, the first to manage the company without being from the family that named it, emphasizes that the group has a great fear of disappearing, like many other companies over 120 years old that have fallen behind.
Werneck stated that another strategy for the company is to no longer operate in European and Asian countries and focus 100% on American countries, as well as creating niche businesses like Gerdau Summit, established in 2017, alongside Japanese Sumitomo, which produces steel parts for the wind energy industry. In this case, the process involves classic production; however, the owner of several factories is advancing into other sectors that are unimaginable for a company that grew in the art of forging steel.
With its management, expenses were reduced by US$ 300 million per year, totaling US$ 900 million over three years. Under Werneck’s leadership, Gerdau reported a surprising net profit of R$ 2.47 billion, 1,006% higher than that of its factories last year. The company’s net revenue reached R$ 16.3 billion, which is 77% more than in 2020.
