Investment in Smart Security Accelerates Growth in the Mining Industry and Becomes the Differentiator for Major Global Leaders in the Sector
Mining is one of the sectors with the greatest growth opportunities in Latin America. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru account for 85% of exports, which poses a challenge for management and operational efficiency. According to ECLAC, among the factors associated with the future increase in demand for minerals is technological change, which includes, among other factors, an innovation that facilitates the development and adoption of “green mining” and the use of technology to minimize environmental impact.

Regarding technology, mining has an important area of development, meaning that despite the undeniable innovation for mineral extraction, a security approach is needed to align the sector with the agreements of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “In this way, Axis found in networked video monitoring technology an ally for the mining sector, as images play an essential role in carrying out operations according to international safety protocols, putting the safety of people as a starting point to ensure the continuity of critical activities and generating a positive impact on the industry,” commented Glaucio Silva, National Sales Manager at Axis.
Worker Safety Is Critical in the Mining Sector
The expert highlights that the technological proposal from companies like Axis Communications focuses on security from the perimeter to the core of operations, where video, audio, and intelligent analysis solutions converge to protect daily activities and optimize processes, safeguarding people and assets. In this sense, perimeter security in mining areas is the first piece of the puzzle.

Technological advancements have led to the implementation of intelligent monitoring systems that enable greater profitability for efficient management of people, resources, and facilities. The combination of various resources such as network cameras, thermal cameras, detection sensors, and high-definition cameras allows for greater reach and effectiveness in executing a defense that adapts to the needs of this sector.
Intrusion protection solutions are equipped to safeguard the entire site, providing intelligent monitoring based on visual and thermal image surveillance systems, radar devices, audio equipment, access control solutions, and analysis software. These elements combine to create a security system that allows multiple zones to be monitored from a single control room, offering comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective protection against intrusions, especially in environments like the mining sector, where natural conditions are inherently challenging.
This technological approach aims to provide the necessary tools to reduce the risks of unauthorized intrusions in protected areas. Similarly, it seeks to ensure proactive surveillance of operations to alert in case of imminent risks. For example, a key issue in the mining sector is worker safety and how their physical integrity is guaranteed when they are inside a mine. In this sense, surveillance has the capability to monitor each critical area and perform predictive analysis of situations, thus being able to identify process failures, sending alerts to the monitoring center to act quickly.
Latin America Has Established Itself as Surplus in Minerals and Metals
In 2017, Latin America established itself as a surplus in minerals and metals. This reality makes certain regions an easy target for criminals specialized in this type of action. Thus, regarding asset security, perimeter protection with access controls and technologies such as radar also allows for the identification of intrusions by suspicious and ill-intentioned individuals. The defensive solution generates the capability to mark virtual lines in restricted areas and detect individuals who cross those lines. In this way, technology also becomes a useful tool for storage and preparation areas for export.
Additionally, during the metal transfer process, an increase in theft rates was noted. According to the 2020 report from the Fraser Institute and Camimex on the state of mining, in 2019 the five most dangerous countries for the sector were Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, respectively. According to Axis experts, this report indicates that permanent surveillance from land and ports in mining communities and along mineral transit routes is necessary.
Companies, in turn, with more rigorous internal procedures can help ensure the viability of operations and improve security in their facilities. “And it is here that the role of electronic surveillance becomes vital, as it is a technology capable of adapting to the sector’s needs, both in the field and in the transportation and transfer of assets,” states Glaucio.
Strategies for the protection of mining assets range from government initiatives to support for private companies. “The proposal for intelligent video surveillance for a safe sector in terms of operations, assets, and people materializes many of the proposals from organizations like the UN. A more holistic view between technology and human effort is needed; thus, the result will be a sector with vast possibilities for economic and sustainable development,” he concludes.
