Sumaré (July 14, 2020) – The Protective & Marine division of Sherwin-Williams, an American multinational based in Brazil, has expanded its line of passive coatings FIRETEX® for passive fire protection, time-tested, with a solution that optimizes applications and reduces costs, allowing precise coating thickness specifications for “onshore” assets. The FIRETEX M90/03 Passive Fire Protection is an intumescent coating that meets UL 1709 test requirements for passive fire protection in “onshore” units, while also allowing stakeholders to apply variable thicknesses of material on different sizes of steel sections.
“Sherwin-Williams’ passive fire protection coatings known as FIRETEX offer design freedom to specifiers while delivering long-term corrosion protection and fire protection defined for asset owners. We continue to expand our offerings worldwide, helping the sector contain costs and improve application quality with faster drying and handling times, more durable finishes, and reduced coats,” said Lucas Coelho, Specialist and Market Coordinator for Passive Fire Protection – Brazil, Protective & Marine division of Sherwin-Williams.
Compared to other intumescent coatings that only meet UL 1709 requirements by applying a universal coating thickness to an entire asset, the FIRETEX M90/03 has been tested and approved for application in variable dry film thicknesses (DFTs) for different steel pieces used in an asset. Other UL 1709 certified coatings may have only been tested for a single DFT of coating for all surfaces, which can result in inadequate protection or generate waste. The FIRETEX M90/03 – as an uncoated product – also meets all durability test requirements of UL 2431 related to air erosion, moisture, salt spray resistance, and other important environmental factors.

The FIRETEX M90/03 passive fire protection provides UL 1709 certified protection against the intense heat of hydrocarbon pool fires for up to four hours. This defense helps protect the structural integrity of various steel assets found in onshore oil and gas refining and chemical processing environments, including tanks and storage terminals, process vessels, and exposed piping.
“Protecting the assets of the oil and gas industry from the long-term effects of corrosion and the immediate hazards of hydrocarbon fires is crucial to ensure operational safety,” said Vania Sampaios, Specialist and Market Development Coordinator for Oil and Gas at the Protective & Marine division of Sherwin-Williams. “We are committed to providing comprehensive solutions like this to generate greater efficiency and better outcomes for the market.”
Applicators typically apply the material using plural equipment and manual application, but they also have flexibility for application with “Single Leg” equipment. The FIRETEX M90/03 also features enhanced dry heat resistance compared to previous M90 series offerings.
The epoxy coating also offers long-term durability, exceptional corrosion protection, ease of application, and a thin applied thickness to help asset owners reduce their total cost of ownership.
“With the FIRETEX M90/03 Passive Fire Protection as the first product to optimize the specification and application of intumescent coatings for UL 1709 fire protection, we further help stakeholders contain material and labor costs while achieving the desired fire protection rating,” says Lucas Coelho.
Determining the ideal coating application thickness for each steel section size found in onshore assets requires careful engineering considerations. Sherwin-Williams’ Fire Estimate and Engineering Team (FEET) is available to provide leading industry technical and engineering support, including technical consulting, training, recommendations, custom coating thickness calculations, and fire protection engineering designs.
The FIRETEX M90/03 Passive Fire Protection is now available through Sherwin-Williams’ extensive global distribution network. Click here (http://pages.s-w.com/M9003-br-pt.html) for more information.
