Rescue Reports.

“It was really quite dramatic… to hear mayday three times and then see the AIS signal of the Vessel Carmen disappear. We were at P50, 9 nautical miles from the location and at 05:10 we started navigating to the site. We arrived at 06:00 and found many floating debris… The vessels listed above were already conducting the rescue… Fortunately, the 18 crew members reported by Carmen at the time of the mayday were rescued.??”

“The captain of the vessel was called to the bridge at 0400h by IMT due to a sudden list of the vessel. At 0430h, despite all efforts, the vessel sank at the stern. An order to abandon ship was given, everyone with life jackets and the inflatable life raft was deployed. All crew members are safe aboard the assist vessel Seacor Grant. The vessel Carmen has sunk. It may be recovered or replaced by an identical one.”

According to the Navy, the company that owns the sunk ship, the “MV Carmen,” was notified to keep a vessel on standby in the area, with oil containment capabilities at the wreck site, to ensure navigation safety in the area and prevent any potential oil spill.

The Navy has already initiated an administrative inquiry to investigate the causes, circumstances, and responsibilities of the accident. Once the inquiry is completed, it will be forwarded to the Maritime Court.

According to the Sindipetro Norte Fluminense (NF), the ship, owned by OceanPact Maritime Services, left Niterói on the 15th and was conducting oceanography services when it sank around 4:50 AM. According to Sindipetro NF, the accident serves as a warning to highlight the need to strengthen on-site inspection teams in operational activities.
