With A New Billion-Dollar Investment, Neoenergia Boosts Renewable Energy Projects In Pernambuco, Strengthens The Electric Grid And Reinforces Commitments To Decarbonization In Brazil
Neoenergia announced an investment of R$ 6 billion in Pernambuco, focusing on renewable energy, electric expansion, and decarbonization. The announcement was made this Tuesday (23) during the contract renewal ceremony for the distributor in the state for another 30 years, until 2060.
This investment represents one of the largest private commitments to energy infrastructure in the Northeast, reinforcing the transition to clean and sustainable sources. The company currently serves 4 million customers in 184 municipalities in Pernambuco, in addition to the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha.
Strategic Distribution of Neoenergia’s Investment
The renewal of the concession contract was the decisive factor for the acceleration of investments. According to Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia, this is the only alternative capable of enabling the essential investments for the electricity sector in the coming years.

A study reveals the expansion of renewable energy procurement in Brazil and shows how companies are taking advantage of opportunities to reduce expenses, ensure energy efficiency, and strengthen strategic environmental commitments.
The allocation of R$ 6 billion will be made until 2029, with the following focuses:
- R$ 3 billion for electric grid expansion
- R$ 900 million to increase system resilience
- R$ 1.7 billion for technological modernization
- R$ 600 million for combating energy losses
These resources will be used to improve service quality, expand access to energy, and make the grid more efficient and secure in the face of climate challenges.
Renewable Energy In Fernando De Noronha: Project Noronha Verde
One of the highlights of the plan is Project Noronha Verde, which will receive R$ 350 million. The goal is to expand renewable energy generation in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, drastically reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The goal is to achieve up to 85% decarbonization on the island, which currently relies heavily on diesel thermoelectric power plants. The initiative includes the installation of photovoltaic systems, storage batteries, and smart distribution infrastructure.
This project is considered a model of energy transition in isolated areas, with potential for replication in other regions of Brazil.
Decarbonization and Modernization of The Electric Grid in Pernambuco
Neoenergia reinforces its commitment to decarbonization, aligning with global emission reduction goals. The investment in Pernambuco is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to clean energy, climate action, and resilient infrastructure.
Besides the Noronha Verde Project, another highlight is the plan to embed the electrical wiring in Recife Antigo, which will account for R$ 185 million. The replacement of over 40 km of overhead lines with underground cables aims to improve urban aesthetics, reduce risks, and facilitate maintenance.
Public-Private Partnership Strengthens Investment In Renewable Energy
During the announcement ceremony, the Governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra (PSD), highlighted the importance of the partnership between the public and private sectors. “We are enabling a cleaner and more modern future for the people of Pernambuco,” she emphasized.
This collaboration is essential to enable large-scale projects, such as those involving renewable energy and modernization of electrical infrastructure. Joint action allows greater agility in execution and ensures that investments meet the real needs of the population.
Economic and Social Impact of Neoenergia’s Investment
Neoenergia’s investment will have significant effects on the local economy. It is estimated to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, especially in the fields of engineering, construction, technology, and maintenance.
Moreover, the improvement of the electric grid will contribute to the development of new businesses, attraction of external investments, and increase of the state’s competitiveness. Renewable energy and decarbonization are not only environmental goals but also engines of economic growth.
The company has already invested over R$ 20 billion in Pernambuco in the last 25 years, promoting significant advances in quality indicators. Since 2015, the average interruption time (DEC) has dropped 43%, and the average frequency (FEC) of events has decreased by 42%.
Neoenergia Focuses On Modernizing The Electric Grid
The allocation of R$ 1.7 billion for modernization includes the digitization of the grid, the implementation of smart meters, and real-time monitoring systems. These technologies allow for greater control over consumption, rapid identification of failures, and reduction of waste.
The fight against losses, which will receive R$ 600 million, is another critical point. Technical and non-technical losses represent a challenge for the electricity sector, directly impacting efficiency and operational costs. With this investment, a significant reduction in these indices is expected in Pernambuco.
Pernambuco As A National Reference In Renewable Energy
Neoenergia’s investment in clean sources reinforces the global trend of energy transition. Brazil, with its abundance of natural resources, has the potential to lead this movement. Projects like Noronha Verde are examples of how renewable energy can be integrated strategically and effectively.
Decarbonization is more than an environmental goal—it is an urgent need in the face of climate change and the pressure for sustainable energy models.
Additionally, the expansion of the electric grid will allow for new customer connections, meet growing demand, and ensure greater reach of the system throughout the state.
Paths To A Sustainable Energy Future
Neoenergia’s announcement marks a turning point for Pernambuco and the national electricity sector. With an investment of R$ 6 billion, the company demonstrates its commitment to renewable energy, infrastructure expansion, and decarbonization.
This movement not only strengthens the state’s energy matrix but also positions Brazil as a reference in sustainability and innovation. The integration between government and private initiative, combined with the use of advanced technologies, ensures that the benefits are long-lasting and comprehensive.
For the people of Pernambuco, it means more quality of life, energy security, and economic opportunities. For the country, it represents an advance towards a cleaner, more efficient, and just future.
