Gigantic Meteor Crosses The Sky Of Ceara And Is Also Seen In Rio Grande Do Norte, Paraiba And Pernambuco, In Videos From Cities Like Sobral, Independencia And Horizonte; Astronomers From Bramon Estimate Speed Of 180 Thousand Km Per Hour And Emphasize That The Phenomenon Presents No Risk To Brazilian Population.

A gigantic meteor illuminated the sky of the Northeast on the night of Monday, December 8, 2025, as it crossed the atmosphere over Ceara at about 180 thousand kilometers per hour and exploded in a flash recorded by security cameras and residents’ cell phones in several cities. The images show the intense brightness cutting across the sky in moments and capturing the attention of those who were on the street or watching the horizon.

The phenomenon occurred on Monday, December 8, but reports and videos continued to spread on social media on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, as more residents identified the gigantic meteor in the recordings. Consulted astronomers explain that the event, despite being impressive and very bright, is part of common natural manifestations of the entry of small bodies into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Flash In The Sky Of Ceara Registered By Residents

In Ceara, the gigantic meteor was observed in several cities on the night of Monday. Residents of Sobral, Independencia, Horizonte, and Guaraciaba do Norte reported the flash in the sky and were able to record the object’s passage on video.

From different angles, the recordings show the luminous point becoming more intense until generating a flash before disappearing.

Besides the images taken by cell phones, a camera installed at the Alto Santo viewpoint, in the interior of Ceara, also caught the meteor crossing the sky.

The high-altitude recording helps to confirm the approximate route of the phenomenon and reinforces the perception that the brightness could be seen from great distances.

Phenomenon Seen In Four States Of The Northeast

The reports were not limited to Ceara. Residents of other Northeast states also claimed to have seen the flash caused by the gigantic meteor.

Testimonials and videos shared indicate observations in Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Pernambuco.

According to the records, those who were in open areas with clear skies had a better chance of noticing the phenomenon.

Experts explain that, in such events, if a person is looking at the correct region of the sky at the exact moment of the meteor’s entry, the flash can be visible from several states at the same time.

Astronomer Details Speed And Trajectory Of The Gigantic Meteor

Astronomer Lauriston Trindade, a member of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network, Bramon, analyzed the first available videos and data.

According to him, the gigantic meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a very high speed, about 180 thousand kilometers per hour, equivalent to approximately 50 kilometers per second.

The specialist explains that the object must have appeared at some point in the central Ceara hinterland and headed west, traveling hundreds of kilometers before disintegrating.

From the images, Lauriston points out that it was a grazing meteor, that is, it crossed the atmosphere at a more horizontal angle, which increases the visible stretch in the sky and the number of locations where it can be observed.

Close To The Geminids Rain, But Without Confirmed Connection

The episode occurs during a time when the Earth is approaching the Geminid meteor shower, one of the most intense in the annual astronomical calendar.

Even so, Lauriston Trindade emphasizes that the gigantic meteor observed on the night of Monday was not anticipated and does not currently have an established relationship with this specific shower.

According to the astronomer, what is known so far is that the meteor was especially intense and bright, standing out among the common records made by monitoring networks such as Bramon.

The expectation is that, with a detailed analysis of the images, researchers will be able to estimate more accurately the origin, approximate mass, and full trajectory of the object that crossed the northeastern sky.

Bramon Will Calculate Trajectory And Reinforces Absence Of Risk

Bramon will also conduct a complete calculation of the trajectory of the gigantic meteor, using images from different cameras scattered throughout the Northeast. This type of study allows for reconstructing the path taken by the object in the atmosphere and identifying where it came from in space.

Lauriston Trindade reinforces that this type of phenomenon does not pose a risk to the population. In most cases, the majority of the meteor’s material is completely consumed in the atmosphere, at about 80 kilometers altitude.

According to the astronomer, the gigantic meteor seen in the northeastern sky was very bright and lasted longer than usual for such events, but it still disintegrated well above the ground, without any impact on Brazilian territory.

Thus, the flash recorded in cities of Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Pernambuco remains a rare spectacle for those who managed to see or record the moment, but without any practical consequences in terms of safety.

For astronomers, each record of a gigantic meteor is also a valuable opportunity for study about small bodies that cross the Earth’s orbit.

If you were outside and saw a gigantic meteor crossing the sky above your city, would you just watch in silence or grab your cell phone right away to try to record the flash?
