Being One of the 10 Largest Factories in the World, the Goal of Nestlé’s New Facility in Espírito Santo Is to Increase Garoto Chocolate Production in Brazil by Up to 10%
Nestlé, one of the largest food companies in the world, is investing in its chocolate operation in Brazil, more specifically in its Garoto factory in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. The Brazilian chocolate brand has been part of the Swiss group since 2002, and its factory is one of the 10 largest chocolate factories in the world. Nestlé plans to invest R$ 430 million over the next two years, from 2023 to 2024, nearly double what it invested during the 2021 to 2022 period, according to Exame.
Production Capacity of Nestlé’s Garoto Chocolate Factory in Espírito Santo Will Increase by About 10%
The investments in the modernization of Nestlé’s Garoto chocolate factory aim to increase efficiency and operational intelligence, as well as make the factory more digital and connected. The investments will follow the concept of Industry 4.0, with automation and robotics, and will also boost sustainable processes at the Garoto facility in Espírito Santo. “We will, for example, take advantage of all the solar incidence in Vila Velha with photovoltaic panels,” explains Gustavo Bastos, Vice President of Legal and Public Affairs at Nestlé Brazil.
With the modernization of the Espírito Santo unit, production capacity will increase by about 10% and allow the Garoto factory to enter new product categories, such as chocolate-covered cookies. Although Nestlé does not disclose the numbers for its chocolate division in Brazil, the subsidiary of the Swiss food giant has recorded growth. In 2022, growth in Brazil was 17.6% (in reais) and 28.4% (in Swiss francs), compared to 2021.

Expansion of Nestlé’s Factory in Espírito Santo Was Driven by Rising Demand
The director of Garoto, Michey Piantavinha, states that the increase in demand for Garoto chocolates was what drove the expansion of the production line at the Espírito Santo factory, according to data from Abicab, chocolate sales in Brazil increased by 10% in 2022 compared to the previous year, generating sales revenue of R$ 7.2 billion and a growth of 16.3% across the sector. Additionally, the pandemic boosted chocolate consumption, according to the director.
Garoto Production Becomes More Sustainable
Nestlé is directing the new production lines to a space already built following sustainability criteria. Moreover, 100% of the waste generated by the Espírito Santo factory is already reused or recycled. At the unit, there is a permanent effort for better resource utilization. By the end of 2022, there was a reduction of 2,677 MWh in energy consumption, 54.2 thousand tons of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a decrease of 11,602 m3 in water consumption.
The extension of the new factory in Espírito Santo also promises to create jobs, with the expectation of hiring between 600 and 1,000 people, according to the Vice President of Legal and Public Affairs at Nestlé Brazil. However, the focus will be on hiring highly qualified labor, as the new unit will be more technological. For this, the company is seeking partnerships with state institutions to offer vocational training. Currently, the Garoto factory employs 2,000 people.
