New Hybrid Pickup Arrives In The Market To Challenge Chevrolet, BYD And Fiat: The New Chinese Foton Tunland Pickup, With A Design Inspired By American Pickups, Promises To Shake Up Sales Of The Leaders Of The Brazilian Market.

The pickup segment in Brazil, just like SUVs, has attracted the attention of various manufacturers, resulting in a significant volume of recent launches. Among the new entries are vehicles like the Chevrolet S10 and the Fiat Titano, alongside anticipated models like the BYD Shark and the new generation of the Mitsubishi L200. However, a new Chinese competitor is about to shake up the market: the Foton Tunland hybrid pickup. With a design inspired by traditional American pickups, the Foton Tunland promises not only to increase competition but also to offer an innovative and sustainable option for Brazilian consumers.

To compete with giants, we will have another Chinese pickup, the Foton, which plans to launch its Tunland lineup in the Brazilian market by the end of June, according to information from the site Autoindústria.

The new hybrid pickup will arrive before the BYD Shark, which will be part of the same segment, but is expected to arrive between August and September. Both pickups from China will compete with traditional models in the market and will have at least one hybrid version.

The new Foton Tunland V9 has already been presented in other South American markets and will now arrive in Brazil. According to the manufacturer, the declared range of the new hybrid pickup is 900 km. The transmission system, according to Foton, is from the renowned ZF and includes a 4×4 drivetrain.

In the international market, the new pickup features gasoline and diesel powertrains with associated micro-hybrid systems. In the first case, a traditional 2.0 engine works in conjunction with a 48V system. In the second case, a 2.0 engine delivers 163 hp and 45.8 kgfm of torque, also associated with a 48V system.

Interior And Design Of The New Foton Tunland Pickup Impresses Brazilian Audience

On the company’s website, the new hybrid pickup is described as: “based on the design philosophy of large American pickups, the Tunland achieves a harmonious balance between strength and capability, maintaining an air of grandeur and stability.”

Depending on the version, the length of the model can be 5.61 m or 5.79 m, with a wheelbase of 3.35 or 3.50 meters and a width of up to 2.1 meters. In practice, it is much larger than traditional midsize pickups in the country.

The Chinese brand highlights that its hybrid pickup features resources such as air suspension, a towing capacity of 3.5 tons, and drivability comparable to that of SUVs.

The equipment list of the new Foton Tunland pickup includes a multimedia system with a 14.6-inch screen, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, panoramic sunroof, rear seats with 27 degrees of inclination, flat floor, automatic emergency braking, 6 airbags, 360° camera, adaptive cruise control, among others.

Other Highlights Of The New Hybrid Pickup

Among the highlights of the new Foton Tunland V9 are some safety items, including 6 airbags, mentioned above, disc brakes on all four wheels, and various driver assistance features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. The utility vehicle also features a start-stop system, which helps with fuel economy and adaptive cruise control.

It is important to emphasize that Foton is already present in Brazil in the truck market as an importer of the Foton Aumark light truck line but with a small operation. Founded in 1996 and operating in the national market since 2010, the Chinese brand has 30 dealerships in the country and is now entering the pickup segment. Since the beginning of the year, the brand has been operating as a subsidiary of Foton Motor Global.
