Hydro Is Converting the Calcination Process and Part of Steam Generation at the Alunorte Alumina Refinery from Fuel Oil to Natural Gas. LNG Will Enable a More Sustainable Operation for Norsk Hydro and Will Also Provide Access to Natural Gas for Other Industries
Last Thursday, New Fortress Energy signed an agreement to supply natural gas to the Alunorte alumina refinery in Pará, which is owned by Norwegian Norsk Hydro and aims to replace the refinery’s energy sources and reduce CO2 emissions, the company reported. The forecast is that NFE will supply Alunorte with 29.5 TBtu of natural gas annually from NFE’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Barcarena (PA).

“We are excited to partner with Norsk Hydro to transition the Alunorte refinery to a cleaner fuel and support Hydro’s global commitment to sustainability and the environment,” said Wes Edens, President and CEO of New Fortress Energy. “This is a great example of how our LNG terminals can accelerate the energy transition in Brazil.”
Alunorte, Owned by Norsk Hydro, Is Among the Most Energy-Efficient Alumina Refineries in the World
Norsk Hydro is converting the calcination process and part of steam generation at the Alunorte alumina refinery from fuel oil to natural gas. This initiative is part of Hydro’s climate strategy and its global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. The fuel switch will reduce the refinery’s CO2 emissions by 600,000 tpy.

“Alunorte is among the most energy-efficient alumina refineries in the world. The shift to LNG is another step toward improving our operations, bringing sustainability and best industry practices to a lower environmental impact,” said John Thuestad, Executive Vice President of Hydro’s Bauxite & Alumina business area.
NFE expects to supply Hydro with 29.5 trillion Btu of natural gas annually (equivalent to approximately 1 million gal./day of LNG) to the refinery from the NFE’s receiving and regasification terminal in Barcarena located in the state of Pará.
The availability of natural gas is crucial for industrial development in the Pará region and allows the substitution of more carbon-intensive fuels to reduce environmental impact. The Alunorte refinery will be a significant gas consumer in Pará and, therefore, a facilitator for establishing LNG supply in the state of Pará.
LNG Will Enable a More Sustainable Operation for Hydro and Will Also Provide Access to Natural Gas for Other Industries
“Access to LNG will enable a more sustainable operation for Hydro and will also provide access to natural gas for other industries and consumers in the state of Pará. This is part of our commitment to support local development,” said Thuestad.
The NFE Barcarena terminal is expected to be completed and ready to supply natural gas in early Q1 2022, and the Alunorte refinery is expected to complete the conversion to natural gas by Q1 2023.
The agreement is subject to the execution of definitive agreements, final construction decision, and approval by Norsk Hydro.
