At 182 Meters, The Statue of Unity Honors Patel and Has Received Over 15 Million Visitors Since Its Inauguration in 2018

In the Gujarat region of India, a gigantic structure of 182 meters stands out in the landscape. On the banks of the Narmada River, the statue represents Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an important leader in the country’s unification process after independence.

Known as the Statue of Unity, the monument was conceived in 2010, still under the state government of Narendra Modi.

The works began in 2013 and were completed in almost five years. Sculptor Ram V. Sutar created the design, executed by the company Larsen & Toubro.

The cost ranged between 400 and 500 million dollars. The local government, the Union, and state-owned companies funded the work.

Cutting-Edge Techniques and Engineering

The construction involved complex challenges. Farmers from various parts of the country donated over 100 tons of scrap metal for the foundation.

An international consortium supervised the technical aspects, ensuring the stability of the structure against winds of up to 180 km/h and earthquakes of magnitude 6.5.

Additionally, the bronze panels used in the cladding were cast in China. More than 6,000 micropanels form the external surface of the statue, which, along with the base, reaches a height of 240 meters.

Public Attraction and Infrastructure

The monument is divided into five zones, with three open to the public. A panoramic gallery, located 153 meters high, can accommodate up to 200 people at a time.

Internal elevators facilitate access. The complex also includes a museum, gardens, and exhibition spaces.

Protests and Social Impact

Despite its success as an attraction, the construction generated protests. Local communities criticized the loss of land and demanded compensation.

There were demonstrations and arrests. The government met some of the demands.

Since its inauguration in 2018, on Patel’s birthday, the site has received over 15 million visitors.

Just in 2023, there were over 5 million, solidifying the statue as one of India’s main tourist attractions.

Comparison with Christ the Redeemer and the Statue of Liberty

To give an idea of the size, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro measures 38 meters, including the pedestal. The Statue of Liberty in New York stands at 93 meters with the base.

The Statue of Unity easily surpasses both, reaching an impressive 182 meters. The difference is striking and reinforces the grandeur of the Indian project.
