The New Stage of the Construction of the Submarine Humaitá Will Begin During a Ceremony Today in Rio de Janeiro, Which Will Feature the Presence of President Jair Bolsonaro.
On this October 11, President Jair Bolsonaro will participate in Rio in the ceremony that will mark the beginning of a new stage of the construction of the submarine Humaitá. The vessel will be the second of the four submarines purchased from the DCNS shipyard and financed by BNP Paribas bank, both French, in 2008.
Technicians and workers will begin to assemble the five parts of the vessel’s hull, built separately, at the Navy’s base shipyard in Itaguaí, in the metropolitan region of Rio. The act will be symbolic. Thousands of internal system cables will still need to be connected.

A platform has already been set up for Bolsonaro in front of the submarine, model S-BR. The construction is part of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub).
The Brazilian justification for, in partnership with France, constructing the four conventional submarines and purchasing the hull of the future nuclear-powered submarine is to defend national sovereignty.
After the assembly of the parts, the Humaitá will spend another year in the construction and improvement phase of its interior. It will only be launched into the sea for testing in the second half of next year.
It is at this stage that Riachuelo, the first submarine planned in Prosub, is currently. The pioneer was launched into the sea at the end of last year, in a ceremony with then-President Michel Temer and Bolsonaro himself, who was about to take office as President.
The Navy anticipates launching one conventional submarine per year. After the Humaitá, it will be the turn of the Tonelero and then the Angostura. They are expected to be launched in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
“We have an extensive maritime area that we call the Blue Amazon, with 5.7 million square kilometers. It is very important for us to have the means to guarantee our sovereignty and defend our riches,” said Admiral Celso Mizutani Koga, the engineer in charge of the works.
After the four conventional submarines, the construction of the nuclear-powered submarine will follow. It will be named Álvaro Alberto, a pioneering Brazilian admiral in research in the sector. Admiral Koga classified this future submarine as “the icing on the cake” of Prosub.
The technology chosen by the Navy is French, from the Scorpène submarines, which use diesel-electric engines. The knowledge transfer process is extensive.
On the atomic ship, the last of the binational package contracted, the participation of Naval Group engineering is limited to non-nuclear parts.
The original project of the four conventional models underwent changes for the comfort of the 31 regular crew members and for range capacity.
The “Br Version,” an informal designation, is about 10 meters longer than the catalog specification.
