Northeast Stands Out in Clean Energy Production. GD Northeast Forum in August Will Discuss Distributed Generation, Energy Storage, and Operation of Solar Parks.
The northeastern region of Brazil emerges as a promising area in the production of renewable energy. Due to its immense potential, especially in distributed generation through sources like the sun, the region is attracting more and more investors and specialists. In August, a specialized forum will be held to discuss these opportunities and challenges, focusing on best practices and innovations in the sector.
One of the key points will be the debate on solar energy, which stands out as one of the main methods of energy generation in the region. Additionally, the event will address strategies for energy storage and the efficient operation of solar parks. With such potential, the Northeast is ready to lead a new era in the production of renewable energy.
Importance of Energy in the Northeast Region
The Northeastern region of Brazil has played a fundamental role in bringing the country closer to achieving the historic mark of 30 GW of installed capacity by 2024. According to data from the National Electric System Operator (ONS), Brazil reached new records in solar energy generation in June. On June 28 and 29, records of 9,598 MW and 9,960 MW were registered, respectively, in the Northeast subsystem. The largest of these records accounted for 84.5% of the energy demand in the region at that time. According to the ONS, there were eight solar generation records in 2024 alone, with six in the Northeast subsystem and two in the National Interconnected System (SIN) in January and March.

Solar Energy Generation in the Northeast
In the distributed generation (GD) modality, the Northeast region is currently responsible for 5.8 GW of installed capacity, with Pernambuco being the third most contributing state, according to the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). Information from the agency also indicates that there are 21,224 installed photovoltaic plants in Brazil, with another 2,641,323 solar generation units in the GD modality. This totals an installed capacity of electric power generation of 43.6 GW, approximately 18.7% of the country’s total, making solar energy the second largest source of energy in Brazil in terms of installed capacity.
Advances in Energy Storage
The state of Bahia recently announced the installation of the first lithium factory in Latin America, a significant development that will contribute to the energy storage market, one of the main opportunities for the country in the coming years. This topic will also be a highlight of the GD Northeast Forum. On August 7 and 8, 2024, the Centre for Events Recife, in Recife–PE, will host the 25th edition of the GD Northeast Forum. The event will feature a diverse program, addressing topics such as energy storage, operation and maintenance of solar parks in GD, financing options, and the region’s potential for clean energy production through micro and mini-generation.
Discussions and Innovations at the GD Northeast Forum
‘The GD Northeast Forum is coming to the city of Recife for the first time, where we held the largest distributed generation event in the country in 2019. We are returning now with the intention of attracting new investments, positioning the state and the Northeast region as leaders’, highlights Tiago Fraga, CEO of Grupo FRG Mídias & Eventos, the organizing company of the Forum. Experts view the event as an innovative opportunity for professionals and enthusiasts to update themselves on the trends shaping the future of energy in Brazil.
Support and Participation in the Forum
‘Having large events like this in the Northeast, especially in the state of Pernambuco, where I am president of the Pernambuco association and, now, also the national association, makes us very pleased, knowing it’s a serious event, with quality and a focus on adding value. We are confident in directly supporting the event’, emphasizes Rudinei Miranda, president of the National Association of Representative Entities of Renewable Energies, one of the event’s supporters. With the participation of specialists, businesspeople, and government representatives, the event promises to be a milestone in the discussion of sustainable development and growth opportunities for distributed energy generation in the region.
